Success is not the province of a chosen few. Success is available to every person willing to plan, think, and work. Award-winning college professor Joe Hoyle has spent 43 years in the classroom seeking to guide and motivate thousands of students to succeed. He shares those same practical ideas here as he introduces innovative concepts such as Level-3 goals, the Derek Jeter Rule, Joe’s Theorem for Success, and the Ebenezer Scrooge Question. As he states in the final chapter, “Success should become like breathing, something we do every moment as a natural part of life.” Written in a readable conversational style that is part storytelling and part autobiography, the book begins with the amazing tale of a student who sets out to be the youngest person in the world to climb the “7 Sisters,” the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Fourteen chapters later, Professor Hoyle ends with the four words most essential to us as we seek to stack the odds of success in our favor. In-between, he describes numerous techniques such as the use of mental visualization and the choice of a personality model that readers can use to create an overall success philosophy that will help them achieve those goals that matter most to them.

Stack the Odds in Your Favor
By JRN
With so many books on success (my search of Amazon books generated 182,320 results for "success"), why is this one worth reading?
First, the ideas offered are useful and straightforward for anyone interested in "success" (however they choose to define it) as long as they are willing to think, plan, and work. The ideas are consistent with my understanding of much of the theory and research about achieving success and goals, though the book concentrates on practical ideas rather than theory and research.
Second, the book is energizing reading with its concise conversational style and many engaging anecdotes about well-known people and the author's own life. After reading the book you understand why the author, a business school professor, is so highly regarded as a teacher (for example, selected twice for Bloomberg Businessweek's ten favorite undergraduate business professors in America). The author has also written the best-selling textbook in his field and has been very successful as a business owner. So, he is someone who knows about "success" from personal experience.
Third, the overall philosophy and techniques in the book can be useful at any point in your life and career. For example, the book has been helpful to me in thinking about how to "stack the odds in my favor" for a new phase I'm beginning in my own career. Ideas I've used include the distinction among Level 1,2 and 3 goals; examining the stories I'm telling myself about what I want to achieve (and sorting out the helpful from unhelpful stories); how to connect the 168 hours I have to spend each week with what I want to achieve; and the important role of visualization and practice. I just sent a copy of this book to my son who recently graduated from college as I'm confident he'll also find useful ideas for stacking the odds in his favor.
An overall excellent book.

Joe Hoyle is a national treasure!
By Kevin
Joe has an incredible ability to communicate in person and in his writing. "Don't Just Dream About Success" offers all of us some very actionable ideas on how to increase our odds of succeeding. His experience molding young people into successful leaders is second to none. The lessons he taught me thirty years ago still resonate and this book is a tutorial on how to blast through mediocrity! It is a great stocking stuffer for any young adult that is important to you. Joe is in fact a national treasure!

A great gift for a high school or college graduate
By Bartlett Pair
This was an excellent book - challenging and informative. I particularly liked that he doesn't promise success in four (or ten) easy steps. He makes it clear that success means sacrifice of short-term wants/needs. But the more work you put in, the greater your chance of success and stacking the odds in your favor. The book is full of excellent, thought-provoking quotes from Ben Franklin, Winston Churchill, Dizzy Dean, Michael Jordon and many others. It is encouraging that success isn't just for the privileged, the wealthy, the "lucky". Identifying level three goals, creating a strategy to succeed, working hard, re-evaluating where you are will greatly enhance your chance for success. And Joe shows you how from examples of his own life. His message...you can do it!
After reading the book, I decided that I want to be a great Nana. I bought a book on encouraging creativity in children, researched ideas on the internet, asked friends on FB for their ideas and am collecting ideas, brainstorming, keeping file cards where I am to write ideas that occur. Frankly, I'm amazed at what I've come up with! I have a plan and executed it. All went well. My grandson loved the activities we did. But evaluation of the time spent with him showed that I needed to refine what I bring with me. I'm excited about this and find myself frequently thinking about new activities he and I can do.
Whether you are starting a new business, graduating from college or high school or believe now is the time to make your dream come true, this is the book for you!
