'Unenvied Resort of Defeated Tribes'

Before Lawrence became a legend for his role in the Arab revolt in World War I, and Woolley achieved fame for his discovery of the royal treasures at Ur, the two Englishmen were young archeologists working together for the British Museum at a dig on the upper Euphrates. It was then that they were recruited by the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) to conduct an archeological survey of southern Palestine. This desolate area extends from northeast Sinai to Wadi Araba, the valley running south from the Dead Sea to the port of Akaba. It was called the Negeb desert then, the Negev today.

The authors' description of the area is probably Lawrence's: "The wearing monotony of senseless rounded hills and unmeaning valleys makes this southern desert of Syria one of the most inhospitable of all deserts - one which, since the [Muslim] invasion, has been the unenvied resort of defeated tribes too weak to face the strenuous life of the greater deserts." The survey provided cover for a secret British military mapping expedition, preparing for the impending war with Germany -- and with the Ottoman Turks, who ruled Palestine.

While British soldiers charted the desert, Woolley and Lawrence seriously went about doing archeology. Woolley concentrated on northern sites; Lawrence headed south for Akaba. This report details their findings - mostly ruins and inscriptions from Byzantine times - plus a few mysteries for good measure, like "the long and puzzling walls" of perfectly preserved dry stone "which ... appear to start and go on and end aimlessly" along hill-slopes for close to a mile, whose purpose was unknown even to local Bedouins.

The report, illustrated with maps, figures and photos, was first published in 1915 and reprinted in 1936 after Lawrence's death. This revised edition adds a wealth of new material, including details of the military mission from the PEF archives, and fascinating newspaper reviews of the 1936 edition.

Excellent educational advice for students and faculty alike

This small volume is an excellent compendium of practical advice for students, faculty, and university administrators on how build strong educational environments. The author, Richard Light, is a professor of education and an educational researcher, and the conclusions he presents are powerful because they are based on more than ten years of detailed interviews with students.
The students were asked to describe their best teachers, the classes that had the greatest impact on their lives, the social experiences on campus that have been most valuable to them, and the things that universities could do to further strengthen the educational environment. What makes a great professor? (It's not theatricality.) What makes a great class? (It's not the quality of the PowerPoint slides.) What makes for great advising? (It's not telling students to get their requirements out of the way.) How can teachers constantly improve their classes? (It's not by handing out an evaluation form at the end of the term.)
Light places particular emphasis on the social environment that universities provide for their students. This is something that has been woefully neglected for more than a generation on many large campuses, and attention to it by faculty is badly needed. I am an advocate of decentralized residential colleges within large universities, and such colleges can provide precisely the kind of environment that Light recommends: stable, rich, genuinely diverse, and full of opportunity.
One popular topic is notable for its absence: technology. There is no discussion of teaching via the web, nothing about distance learning, nothing about video conferencing, yadda, yadda, yadda. The message is clear: outstanding education comes from personal contact, not remote access.
If you are a college professor, this book may be the only general-purpose "education" book that you will ever need. And if you are a student, or the parent of a student, this straightforward guide will help you "make the most of college."

Not really for students...

As a professor, I found the book excellent, both for its many insightful suggestions and as a reminder of the student experience. If I were evaluating this book for faculty, I'd give it five stars.
But the book's title and marketing indicate that this is a how-to book for college students. That's deceptive: It is a summary of findings by Harvard's self-assessment team. Suggestions for students are good when they come, but they're spread between suggestions more useful to college faculty and administration. As an example, one idea is to schedule discussion classes just before dinner, so that students in the class could eat together afterward and possibly continue discussion. That's a great idea for administrators, but students can't make much use of it. The book would be stronger if it were separated for the two potential audiences.
The book also suffers from not being up-front about its origins: It summarizes findings of an assessment project at Harvard, but you won't find it described until you reach the appendix. I realize that fewer copies would be sold if they admitted this in the introduction. But until I reached the appendix, where the project's major questions were finally described, I was left wondering why the book's organization was so lopsided. Particularly, the part on campus diversity was much longer than I expected; it wasn't until I reached the appendix that I learned why. (The appendix was one of the best parts. In fact, I recommend reading it first.)
I'd certainly recommend the book to faculty and administrators from any college. The work is clearly based on extensive, well-done interviews, and the analysis is both well-organized and rich in ideas. Just recognize it for what it is.

This is a MUST for students, parents AND educators

Read MAKING THE MOST OF COLLEGE: STUDENTS
SPEAK THEIR MIND by Richard Light . . . this is a book
that is definitely NOT for everybody . . . but if you're a high
school or college student, a parent of either, or a teacher or
administrator at any level of education, then you should
obtain a copy and devour it as soon as possible! . . . Light,
a professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education,
researched students at that institution for over 10 years . . . but
what he has to say applies to virtually any school at any level.
I've been teaching for some 30 years--can you believe it? (I was
a child prodigy, of course, having started at the tender age of
7. NOT.) . . . Yet even I managed to get several ideas that I plan
to implement just as soon as I can.
I liked the author's use of verbatim quotes from
students . . . in addition, his overall findings made sense to me:
1. Learning outside of classes, especially in residential settings
and extracurricular activities such as the arts, is vital.
2. A large number of students say they learn significantly more
in courses that are highly structured, with relatively many quizzes
and short assignments.
3. Professors increasingly are encouraging students to work
together on homework assignments.
4. Some undergraduates, when asked to identify a particularly
profound or critical experience at college, identify a mentored
internship not done for academic credit.
5. For most students the impact of racial and ethnic diversity on
their college experience is strong.
6. Students who got the most out of college, who grew the most
academically, and who are happiest organize their time to include
activities with faculty members, or with several other students
focused around accomplishing substantive academic work.
7. I was surprised by students' strong attitude toward writing.
8. A large majority of undergraduates describe particular
activities outside the classroom as profoundly affecting their
academic performance.
9. Students talk about [foreign] languages with special
enthusiasm.

About the Author
ROBERT COHEN was the founding chair Drama at the University of California at Irvine, where he continues to serve as the department's Claire Trevor Professor of Drama. He has also been a resident acting teacher at the Actors Center in New York, the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the Korean National Arts University, and the national theatre academies of Hungary, Finland, and Estonia. He is an accomplished stage director, scholar, playwright, drama critic, and teacher. A director by training (Doctor of Fine Arts, Yale Drama School), Cohen has staged thirteen professional productions at the Utah and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals, plus well over a hundred productions at Stages Theatre Center (Hollywood), Virginia Museum Theatre (Richmond), Theatre 40 (Beverly Hills), Image Theatre (Boston), Summer Repertory Theatre (Santa Rosa), the Medieval Drama Project (Irvine), the Manhattan Theatre Source, various universities, and several operas, videos and films. In addition to Theatre and Theatre: Brief Edition, he is also the author of many theatre books, including Acting One, Advanced Acting, Acting in Shakespeare, Acting Professionally, Acting Power, More Power to You, Giraudoux: Three Faces of Destiny, Creative Play Direction, and two dramatic anthologies. His essays have appeared in Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics, Theatre Forum, Theatre Survey, Modern Drama, Theater der Zeit, Essays in Theatre, On Stage Studies, The Drama Review, Contemporary Literature, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Slavic and East European Performance, Experiment and Innovation, and Dramatic Theory and Criticism. Cohen's play, The Prince, published by Dramatic Publishing Company, has been professionally produced in Long Beach, Pittsburgh, Budapest, and in staged readings in New York and Los Angeles; his dramatic translations (The Bourgeois Gentleman, The Misanthrope, Clizia, Tibi's Law) and opera translations (The Magic Flute, Carmen) have been both produced and published widely. For the past twenty years, Cohen has been the Southern California drama critic for Plays International, reviewing over two hundred plays. In 1999, he received the national Career Achievement award from ATHE - the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.

Pragmatic Leadership

In the The Secret Red Book of Leadership, author Awdhesh Singh unveils a pragmatic look at leadership. As he best states in the introduction "It (the book) is not a self-help book peddling a ready-made formula for success and leadership. The book describes the truth as it finds it - bitter or sweet. It explains reality without trying to be politically correct." This is precisely what makes this book very unique and insightful - within its categories of leadership and self-help. Further he advances that "To evolve as leaders, we need to dwell on how good relates to evil, virtue to vice, love to hatred, means to end, sacred to profane" - again a differentiator. A worthwhile, perceptive and practical read on Leadership. My only feedback for improvement, would be around the structure of the book, which is hard to follow if one is reading cover to cover.

'The Secret Red Book of Leadership' contains practical Leadership wisdom. It gives us an amazing perspective of looking the things and situation differently.

I was amazed to see the real blend of theory with Illustration and solid reasoning. For the people already in this role, it gives the basis to evaluate the action and change the style to make the significant impact.

On the other hand, for the people who would like to be a Leader, this book can establish a solid foundation.

I always believed Leadership is mostly about strategy, out of box thinking and taking initiatives. Whereas, a small decision can have substantial impact. It is very well explained and elaborated in each chapter. Highly impressed with the content. Much Thanks to the Author for spending due diligence and releasing an unique book.

FOR ALL WHO ASPIRE TO BE LEADERS

“The Secret Red Book of Leadership” is a leadership book like no other.

Rather than produce a typical guide that instructs us to be a positive person and cookie-cutter results will follow, in this book, the author pulls back the veil to reveal both the light side and the dark side of leadership. We are instructed that, in order to win the game of leadership we must learn to use all the means at our disposal.

The author asserts that leaders must be good actors, and instead of running from evil they should use their vices as a source of power, yet publicly conceal them. Similarly, we must be skilled in the art of deception because our enemies will surely use it against us.

Unlike other dry, unimaginative leadership books, this book is as fun to read as it is shrewd and practical. It is awash with countless insightful stories, quotes, and examples.

Abraham Lincoln said, “People are more easily influenced & informed through the medium of a broad illustration than in any other way.” This is how the author wisely teaches us as well. The stories in this book, like the stories of the master storytelling President himself, paint pictures that speak a thousand words.

For example, to elucidate one of the key points of the book, that the prime objective of leaders is to produce results, regardless of how you do it, the author told this story:

“A cab driver reaches the pearly gates of Heaven. St. Peter looks into his Big Book and tells him to pick up the gold staff and silk robe and proceed onwards into Heaven.
Next in line is a preacher. St. Peter looks him up too in his Big Book, furrows his brow and says, ‘Oh, we’ll let you in, but you take that cloth robe and wooden staff.’
The preacher is shocked and protests, ‘But I am a man of the cloth. You gave that cab driver a gold staff and a silk robe. Surely I rate higher than a cabbie!’
St. Peter responds matter-of-factly, ‘This is Heaven and up here, we are interested in results. When you preached, people slept. When the cabbie drove his taxi, people prayed.’ ”

I liked that the quotes and illustrations were collected from leaders of many cultures from around the world. The rules of leadership are clearly applicable across international boundaries.

How much did I relish the quotes in the book? They were so good that my approach to reading this book was to flip through and read all the quotes first, and then to read the rest of the text.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter entitled, “Balancing the Masculine with the Feminine.” Like the balance of the Yin and the Yang, the personality pf the true leader must incorporate both male and female qualities. As Napoleon said, “I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion.”

One of the outstanding features of this book is that it confronts us with ideas that seem counter intuitive to what we may have been taught in the past. For example, the necessity for leaders to use deception and the need to embrace one’s vices. Yet, upon careful reflection we gradually recognize the accuracy of the author’s subtle thoughts.

This is a well written and vitally useful book for all who aspire to be leaders, or for those of us who wish to understand how real leaders achieve extraordinary goals.
