This book covers a wide range of facts that have explained the origin of several negative stereotypes that africans are labeled with. The knowledge that I found in this book was never offered in any of my history classes. This book is a must read for anyone seeking the truth. I highly recommend this book to all thirsty souls.

Wonderful

This book is a book that i have personally would not have read were it not forced upon me for one of my classes. This book explains alot about the blanks and holes in the African American past that many Europeans have tried so hard to conceal. At first its hard to comprehend because as an African American you've been told were your place already is in society and that your past was one not to talk about. But in fact i never knew alot about my homeland of Africa. Its a very knowledgable book that i highly recommend. Its made me question alot about the African Past. Its made me question everything from the goverment to religion. Its also helped me to understand why white people have tried to conceal our past. I feel that if this book were mandatory for everyone to read the world would become such a better a place. Anyone thats African American should read this book and anyone else too.

This is one of those rare books that is not bent on being politically correct, but brutally honest. Written in a genuine style, this is a must read for anyone looking to understand American history, psychology, and how we can work together to rise above the slave mentality -- all of us, black, white, brown, yellow, whatever.

Reviewing the first German edition of the book in Isis, Zirkle wrote that "The overall history of genetics falls easily and naturally into three periods. Recently, the first...has been covered excellently by Hans Stubbe."

Likewise, reviewing the second German edition (1965) for Science, the geneticist L. C. Dunn noted that "It is a sign of the widening interest in the origin of genetics that the first brief comprehensive account of its history before 1900 has already reached a second edition....

"The first edition was an excellent and succinct account of the work of Mendel and of his predecessors beginning with the first domesticators of plants and animals. The first chapters were devoted to ideas about reproduction and heredity as found in the works of the Greek and Roman writers of antiquity and of scientists and observers of the Middle Ages. The beginning of a new era in the 18th century was noted in the controversy concerning performation and epigenesis and especially in the botanical discoveries of the late 17th century and the 18th century (by Camerarius, Linnaeus, and Kölreuter). Some 40 pages (now expanded to 60) were devoted to the plant breeders and theorists of evolution in the 19th century, including Mendel, and were followed by an excellent chapter on the origin of variations and the mutation theory.... The last chapters, about a fifth of the text, were devoted to the great cytological discoveries of the 19th century, to Weismann and the germ plasm theory, to the rediscoveries of Mendel's laws, and to the first conceptions of a chromosome theory of heredity.

"The second edition is an improvement and expansion of the first. Forty pages have been added to the text, including a 12-page facsimile of Mendel's letter of 3 July 1870 to Carl von Naegeli (the holograph has not been published previously) and 115 titles added to the already extensive bibliography. Proper attention has now been paid to Karl Pearson's contributions (1900 to 1909), to the theory of Mendelian equilibrium, and to Fisher's critique of Mendel's theory....

"A valuable feature of the book is the brief biographical notices of most of the chief actors in the history of genetics up to and including the rediscoverers of 1900. Most of these notices are accompanied by portraits."

The present English translation is based on the second German edition, but it contains in turn a wealth of new material added by the author since the German publication.

If you're looking for a comprehensive resource for NCLEX prep, look no further...this book is fantastic. Extensive topic coverage complete with rationales for every response. Prefer going online to take quizzes? No problem this book's got that, too. (Although the content online is a tad bit confusing to navigate, once you figure out how to get to the quizzes section, you won't forget.) I have several books for review and this one is my personal favorite. Some of my professors loan this text out to students, but I prefer 24/7 availability in my own home! :-) Happy studying, future nurses!

UPDATE: I saw sooo many reviewers having trouble getting to the online content to take system-specific quizzes that I decided to post instructions here on how to get to the right place.

1) Go to the Pearson Pegasus log-in page once you've set up online access, and log in.
2) Click on the book title on the left side of the website.
3) On the next page, on the left side near the top, you will see a menu bar that has the following options: "Today's View, Course Content, Grades, Communicate". Look just BELOW this menu bar and you will see the following options: "View All Content, Course Calendar, Learning Objectives."
4) Click on Learning Objectives.
5) On the left side, you will see the following options: "Client Need, Topics Areas, Integrated Process."
6) To take quizzes related to your system or topic of choice, click the plus sign for "Topics Areas".
7) Click on your system of choice.
8) On the right side, there are several options for that topic of study. Scroll down to the bottom-ish. You will see a heading called "Self Study" for that topic of study. Click on it.
9) A separate pop-up window will appear so that you may begin your quiz.

I did so well in school, that almost everyone in my class asked me what I was doing, and I recommended this book.... even better -- in block 4, make sure and use the CDs -- this is how I passed block 4 respiratory and cardiac. BTW, I used all of the other hogan books (audio) and listened in the car. I should be on their marketing team.

Easy to understand and simple content

I am an International graduate and to tell you honestly it has been hard for me to just even start studying. I've tried Saunder's, Kaplan, Mosby's, Davis', name it all. But, of all the books I've read, this book helped me a lot not only in terms of learning the theory and acquiring nursing knowledge and wisdom, it has also nurtured me on practicing my answering skills. The questions inside this book are really hard which I think is a good thing cause it makes you think more. Also, a lot of the questions are similar to the NCEX RN Exam. Trust me, this book explains everything you need to know in a convenient and easy manner. This is the only book that sharpened my mind and it prepared me for my NCLEX RN Exam. Two thumbs up for this book!!

Useful Tool

This book reads easy and fast and it should be handed out to every parent whose child is diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. This is by far the best resource for learning to understand and work with a child diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. This book also adds valuable strategies for dealing with day to day activities from going to the grocery store to attending weddings and funerals. It provided me with useful tools for understanding the diagnosis process.

A Powerful Resource For All

I found this book to be a very helpful resource for both parents and professional working with children. It makes it very easy to understand Sensory Processing Disorder by providing real examples of children with SPD, current research, and strategies to accommodate children in their classrooms and at home. This is a very powerful resource, since it provides the reader with what doctors know, especially given their years of experience. It provides insight into three types of SPD and their subtypes, and the reader can understand the differences between SPD and other similar disorders. I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers who see concerning behaviors in their child. Dr. Ostovar allows the reader to understand the reasons behind the child's behavior, and also provides very practical strategies to manage and accommodate the child in all sorts of environments.

This book is a must have resource for educators, caregivers, and parents.

She has included a checklist of potential issues and what areas of sensory processing they relate to. Dr. Ostovar provides practical advice for parents on taking a sensory-sensitive child to birthday parties or family events. Her step-by-step strategies offer sound advice for parents navigating the world with a child with sensory processing disorder. I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource.

Not my taste at all

I found this book to be confusing, without a plot and without poetry. I didn't find anything pleasant in it.

To compare it with The Name of the Rose, as a reviewer has done in the New York Times, is extremely far-fetched.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and would have given it no star, if that was possible.

About the Author

Jacqueline Bussie is Director of the Forum on Faith and Life and Professor of Religion at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She has a BA, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Davidson College; an MA in Religion from Yale University; and a PhD in Theology, Ethics, and Culture from the University of Virginia.

Compulsively readable!

She has taken a subject that could be difficult, in fact would be difficult had she not placed it inside fascinating story after fascinating story. She grabbed my attention with the very first line. Not only has she challenged me, she has awakened something new in me: a desire to speak truthfully about how life is sometimes horrible, even for the most faithful followers of God. I've spoken my last well-intentioned pious "comfort lie" to people who are hurting. Thank you Dr. Bussie.

Outlaw Christian comes as a breath of fresh air for anyone who has ever felt angry at God, anyone whose faith is full of doubt, anyone who cannot simply “get over” a painful loss, anyone who struggles to honestly admit how imperfect life can be. Digging deep into messages from the biblical tradition that are too often overlooked, Jacqueline Bussie offers hope to those for whom Christianity is not a set of feel-good, cliché-sounding beliefs, but rather a path for seeking peace, justice, integrity, and healing in a world of overwhelming unfairness, suffering, and violence. In many ways, Bussie’s book popularizes the kind of critical thinking and questioning that many scholars in the field of religion encourage—the kind that has the potential to make one’s relationship with one’s sacred values more authentic, honest, and life-giving. Personally, I no longer envision God as having human-like qualities (e.g., as acting, knowing, intending, loving like people do). Yet Bussie’s theology is flexible enough to allow for (and even affirm) the kind of exploration and not-knowing that my unconventional spiritual proclivities require. By encouraging readers to “break the rules” that keep us from developing a more thoughtful, responsible, and honest faith, Outlaw Christian calls on everyone to confront the truth of their experience—even/especially if that truth is messy, painful, and/or uncertain—in order to grow personally and to bring some redemption to a broken world.

Buckle Up

Curious about the following expressions: composting pain, steward of suffering, radical listening, hope sleuth and shedding secrets? If so, buy this book! If not, buy it anyway! Then, buckle up for the ride of your life.

I consider myself a reasonably awake, believing Christian yet while reading this book, it was as if I'd taken The Red Pill (think Matrix) and started seeing a whole new reality. Scales came off and so did the shackles. Some anyway. Dr. Bussie's words not only liberate but challenge, affirm and inspire. Her truth telling is beyond refreshing- it's deeply necessary. For our culture...for our world. She is clearly a scholar yet writes a surprisingly accessible book. The biggest compliment I can give is upon finishing, I wanted to reread it immediately. This time, highlighter in hand.

It has been said that the glory of God is man - and woman - fully alive. It doesn't matter if you're disenfranchised, disconnected, disbelieving, doubting or somewhere else in a different pattern of alliteration, this book will set you on a path to full aliveness. And it may just launch you there.
