I absolutely love Fletcher's books

I absolutely love Fletcher's books. They are so well written, they keep you totally involved to the point you totally forget the world around you and that is what I look for in the books I read. All of her books do that to me, and that is my rule of thumb for a great story. Thanks Fletcher.

The Warriors challenge.

This is the third book in the Chronicles of Alsea in which Fletcher brings to life a world in which no one is perfect or completely bad. The characters are vibrant and easy to relate to on differing levels.

Excellent book - not a standalone

Like some others have said, it feels a bit odd reviewing this one on its own. The book doesn't stand alone at all because it directly picks up where Without A Front – The Producer’s Challenge leaves off. If you haven't read that book, this review will have a bunch of spoilers.

Tal managed to save Salomen from the assassination attempt at the end of The Producer's Challenge and now she's in the hospital with burns over much of her body. Their tyree bond has been forged for survival reasons rather than love, but Tal and Salomen are drawing strength from each other as they grapple with the fact that someone tried to kill Tal.

As they hide the true nature of their relationship from the world and the degree to which Tal has been injured, they have some hard truths to deal with--not only does someone want Tal dead, but Salomen's brother helped the assassin know where she would be. It also becomes clear that there's corruption deep within the Council and a faction that wants Tal overthrown.

Unsurprisingly, I loved The Warrior's Challenge. The romance that began in The Producer's Challenge continues strongly and is satisfying, there's tons of action, and the intrigue around the Council corruption was handled well. Also, let's just say that the author made up for the lack of sex in the first two books, and how.

Salomen and Tal continue to be great. The tension that ran between them in The Producer's Challenge isn't there in quite the same way, but I particularly enjoyed seeing them negotiate their new life together. I also loved Vellmar the Blade. She's the perfect sidekick for Tal and I can't wait to read her novella. Micah had his own journey that is excellent and the big reveal about his backstory totally surprised me, but worked well.

If you've liked the other books in this series, you'll like this one. I'm looking forward to seeing what else Fletcher DeLancey has for us in the Chronicles of Alsea.

Better than Stewart's book... In fact, the best!

I've used both Stewart's Calculus and Thomas'. Interestingly, Thomas has been writing calculus books for a LONG time and i've picked up several editions in the used book stores, because from the first time i bought a Thomas calc book back in Jr. High for my own self interest, i was a fan of his style.
His style is that of the old-school American text book authors who wrote in a clear, concise manner of English, using tangible and visual examples. Those old writers still thought of much of the material as novel, and were appealing to a more agrarian society of students.. especially the young and booming field of engineers. This is lacking in today's texts. The only drawback is that some old texts are much too impersonal and use the passive voice for everything, which can make them very difficult to read at times.
Thomas' recent editions (at least - i can not recall for the 60's era editions) are not only formally clear, but easy to understand and read. Here are the ways in which Thomas' book beats Stewart's book:
1) His explanations are accompanied by better graphics. Thomas uses more graphics to show each example and derivation. He uses MULTIPLE frames of graphics for one example, instead of just a single graphic. This makes following his train of thought much easier.. it's almost like watching a video.
2) His writing style is more complete. He leaves out fewer ideas than Stewart. Sometimes Stewart, like most authors, forgets to mention what exactly he is thinking and the reader is left trying to figure out his train of thought.
3) Thomas guides the reader through more (graphical) derivation of concepts. Sometimes, you will find derivations which Stewart relegates to problems for the reader (don't you hate that!?), are actually shown visually by Thomas!
Thomas' book is in fact probably the best calculus textbook around. I've looked at many many of them, and fraknly, none of them are this complete and well developed... The funny thing is, Thomas' book was one of the best decades ago. It has only gotten more exhaustive and more mature!
You should have this book in your reference library at least. You are more likely to find illustrative discussion on any particular introductory calculus subject in this book than you are in other books.

I had edition 6e for cal 1 and recently purchased this edition
for cal 2. This version is much better. People who already know
calculus tell me how great edition 6e is, but the problem is that
this textbook is intended for 18-20 year olds(for the most part)
who are only being exposed to calculus for their first or second
time. 6e examples skip alot of algebraic manipulations which
can have you struggling for days, only to find out that you missed
something basic, the 12th edition fixed alot of those problems. Also in
6e the excerises at the end of the chapters will have a few equations and
then kill you with word problems,this is a problem for me because I consider
myself a mathlete and I enjoy solving equations. I understand they want you to be able to analyze and not just go through the steps, but at least put some equations in there. To sum up,the 12th edition is way more user/beginner friendly than 6e.

I used this book through three semesters of Calculus and feel like it was very understandable and taught me a great deal. It can definitely feel dry at times but it's not meant to entertain you anyway. The examples were clear and built you up to the tougher exercises. It's worth every dollar spent and I'm confident you could get through calculus courses without a professor by self teaching yourself with Thomas.

About the Author
Helen Keller is Professor of Constitutional, European and Public International Law at the University of Zurich. She served as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee from 2008 until 2011, when she was elected as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

As a pediatrician, writer, wife, and mother, Perri Klass has demonstrated how medicine is integral to the health of families and communities, and how doctors themselves struggle to balance the conflicting needs of profession, self, and family. As medical director of Reach Out and Read, she encourages other pediatricians to foster pre-reading skills in their young patients. While earning her M.D. at Harvard, Klass contributed articles to "Mademoiselle" and "The New York Times" as well as to scientific and medical journals. She also wrote her first book, "A Not Entirely Benign Procedure "(1987), which chronicles her introduction to medicine and motherhood. In the following years she has continued to publish books, essays, award-winning short stories, a novel, and numerous articles, ranging from professional papers to popular journalism and travel pieces.

Great historical read!

This is such an excellent book, especially for those who enjoy learning more about history. So many people know the story of her childhood, and how she overcame being deaf and blind, but that's not her real achievement. She did so many important things after that time, but no one really knows anything about that, it seems. I think this should be a book every high school and college history student should have to read. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Faithful Reader

Like other Paul L. Maier books, I found this book informative and faithful. The explanation of the prophesies was a special treat. I liked the prayers at the end of each chapter. For some reason I was moved to tears several times. Maybe it's because what God has done for us that we couldn't do for ourselves is so moving. I want to share this book as a gift to my son-in-law.

Bring The Music

McGee delivers a haunting personal chronicle of an incredible career in which he connected with music in the forefront at a momentous time, through the 80s and 90s and rushing towards the turn of the millennium.

Later it becomes clear that he has not rested on his laurels, his passion persists, despite the blistering pace of work and play he and his many friends and collaborators endured and nurtured for 30 years.

I really enjoy his matter-of-fact humility and straight-ahead knowledge, the nuances of his language and personality that come through in this book.

It's fascinating to read about the deals taking place, artists he represented and encouraged, brought into the spotlights, and the gradual but powerful way he learned how to do business with the major industry players.

By nature it might seem episodic, but there is an arc of history there that he's too self-effacing to harp on, he just offers it up in such a way that once concluded you feel as though you spent a long weekend at his remote country house enjoying drinks while he tells these unique tales. A true artist of passion and intellect.

This book will inspire you to reach out and bring more music into your life.

Drug-fueled tales of Primal Scream, Oasis, music industry & more

Perhaps you need not to have been a devotee of the author's famous Creation Records label to appreciate this books, but I think it's safe to say that your enjoyment of this tome would benefit from having heard and enjoyed some of the bands that Alan McGee signed and managed, acts such as Primal Scream, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Libertines.

Creation Records was indeed an influential and exciting label and in addition to some of the well-known acts, the label released great records by terrific lesser-known bands too, including Biff Bang Pow, a band that McGee himself was a member of. This book is more than a tell-all tale of the bands that McGee signed or hung out with, but it also delves into his own turbulent journey in life, one that was dominated for many years by excessive drug use. McGee pulls no punches when it comes to those decadent days, but I found the endless drug-fueled tales a bit tedious after a few chapters. Okay, you were a mess; we get it. Much more interesting to me was reading about dealing with, and recording with, bands such as House of Love, Ride, and the prolific, underrated genius Ed Ball.

While some passages of the book are entertaining, informative, or just plain funny, other parts meander and drift, or are just confusingly presented. McGee is a colorful character with plenty of wild tales to tell, but he's not much of a writer and the book suffers from weak prose, lack of continuity, and his use of too much Scottish slang. There were times I would stop in the middle of a paragraph, wondering what --- or who --- he was rambling on about. Where were the editors? On one hand, you could call McGee's writing style refreshing and true to his maverick spirit, but on the other hand reading such gibberish can be maddening for the reader.

All in all, though, this was a fun read, and a book that will be of interest to anyone who was immersed in the "indie" music scene of the 1980s and 1990s.
