About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.  Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.

Perfect book for beginners in chem

Perfect book for beginners in chem. special features of the book eg skill builder boxes pose questions relating to the material in the chapter. These help in acquiring the necessary knowledge and helps understand the topic better. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the concepts learnt, and many question types that ensure the necessary knowledge has been acquired. The language of the book is Easy to understand. Many illustrations are in picture form to help with visualization of what happens. The book also has a website where online one on one tutorials can be used to ask any doubts. This books is perfect because every other book will just introduce to the main topics but this book has every topic in chemistry introduced. This way the student gets to know which area of chemistry he/she is most likely interested in.

Definitely worth buying if you are looking for a book which covers everything you want in a clear understandable way.

PS I never took a chem course in high school. Right now I'm in uni and i'm majoring in mechanical engineering. I have chem course which is general chem. But because I had no prior knowledge of chem I bought this book to help me out get introed to all areas of chem and especially those I will need. So in the summer i went through the whole book solving every exercise that is in it. Now i find chem interesting (ty Nivaldo) !!

Sorry for such a long review but when it is about a perfect book, length shouldn't matter ;)

Ripped off again, do not buy Kindle versions.

*sigh* Bought the rental version of this book on Amazon, because it was the same as the hardcover and thus not as heavy. Of course it does not include the all important access code which you need to pass any college class these days. So as a result I have just tossed another $80 down the proverbial drain.

Michael: But since you bought the kindle edition I do believe that it only comes with the book version for the kindle

As always, buyer beware, DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK. YOU WILL BE SCREWED.

Swan Song is rich with such characters as an ex-wrestler named Black Frankenstein, a New York City bag lady who feels power coursing from a weird glass ring, a boy who claws his way out of a destroyed survivalist compound. They gather their followers and travel toward each other, all bent on saving a blonde girl named Swan from the Man of Many Faces. Swan Song is often compared to Stephen King's The Stand, and for the most part, readers who enjoy one of the two novels, will enjoy the other. Like The Stand, it's an end-of-the-world novel, with epic sweep, apocalyptic drama, and a cast of vividly realized characters. But the tone is somewhat different: The good is sweeter, the evil is more sadistic, and the setting is harsher, because it's the world after a nuclear holocaust. Swan Song won a 1988 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel. It's a monster of a horror book, brimming over with stories and violence and terrific imagery--God and the Devil, the whole works.

A deep and engrossing read

I write this review in the knowledge that probably no one will read it - there are already over 700 reviews and almost all of them are five star. This review is part of that legion and that's fine by me.

So given I am writing this review for me - I will take some licence. Firstly I have read loads of PA ficton ( favorite so far is The Old Man and the Wasteland), but I hesitated with my purchase of Swan Song. I kept coming across references and praise of Swan Song. At $10 is was a lot more than many Kindle reads I buy. Then I thought, the last few books I read were only a couple of bucks - but they were c#%^ and pretty short too. So I thought, Swan Song is over 800 pages - so even if it is just okay it is still better value. So I bought it and have not experienced buyers remorse.

Swan Song draws you in. It is a different type of PA novel as it as a mystical undertone. Not in the kind of 'roll your eyes, give me a break' way - but a spiritual side to the story that adds to its depth and humanity. There are several concurrent plots which weave together as the story unfolds. Each sub plot is interesting. What surprised me was that I became so engrossed with one story line, I literally forgot about some other characters and was surprised when they reappeared. It was ' oh of course, I had completly forgotten about you guys'. That is a really good thing showing just how easy it is to become lost in the story.

If I was being ultra critical I would say that there was a certain 'convenience' of events towards the end. Also - and yes this is just a personal bugbear, the author has obviously had limited exposure to horses. Horses do not lap water like a dog - they suck it. They also really don't behave in the way Mule did. Yes, yes I know it is a minor point - but it was one of the few times in the story where an inaccuracy brought me out of the story and back to reality.

I see many reviewers have compared this to other books ( and no I am not going to reference the books). This really gets my goat. Swan Song is an original work that stands high in its own right. It is , in my opinion, almost insulting to say 'its just like xyz', 'it's as good as xyz'. Swan Song is a great read - enough said.

Just re-read Swan Song which I had originally read 20-some years ago. Love this book. It's about the long-term aftermath of an all out nuclear war in which America is left as wasteland. It blends the horror of a nuclear apocalypse with supernatural and magical forces. As survivors wander from one charred hamlet to the next, a militia led by a crazed Vietnam Vet and a young insane boy(who perpetually believes himself to be a video game player) into a giant army while the other main characters (all in different parts of the country) are drawn together through a supernatural glass jewel that formed in the destruction of 5th Avenue NYC. Meanwhile, a mysterious demon-like entity who can change faces in a split second is traveling the wasteland enjoying the carnage and out to destroy anyone who might bring hope to the survivors (mainly the three main heroes of the novel: A former wrestler, a young girl with supernatural horticultural/agricultural powers and a former bag lady from NYC.) I have seen from other comments some dissent as to whether or not this novel is like the Stand by Stephen King. I would have to vote with the side of---yes, very much so! It just uses nuclear war instead of plague as the theme. I loved the Stand but I thought Swan Song was a bit better, I enjoyed the characters more and wish it had been made into a movie, too.

After 25 years...

My boyfriends best friend had just gotten out of the Marines, and we were his first stop. In addition to the numerous bottles of alcohol he brought (I believe the are required to take classes on how to consume large amounts of alcohol and remain standing!) he also brought this book. He handed it over to me and said it was terrific and told me to read it. He wasn't kidding, because I finished it before he left, and I returned it to him. It was was often popping up in my mind throughout the years and I finally decided to locate it and re-read it. My problem was, I couldn't remember the title or the author. (Probably would have been able to if I had not been powering through it!). For years I would use a search engine with words and phrases in hopes of finding out something that could point me in the right direction. Finely, a month ago, I was pretty sure I had found it. I started in on it, and it was most certainly the right one.

It was better than I remembered, and I feel so fortunate to have found it. I now have my own Marine, my son, and I will be sending him this book in his next care package from home. It is a very thought provoking book that has a little twist of fantasy throughout it, but who knows...if we blow up the world, those things might very well happen. In light of our current political issues I found myself even more intrigued. I'm pretty sure most people remember the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me". Most of us know they can hurt. Let's hope that anyone who is entrusted with our country remembers how devastating it could be to make a rash decision.

Focusing on 17 U.S. presidents, each single- or double-page entry begins with the same phrase ("Presidents are made of…"), includes an interesting anecdote showing the human side of that individual, and presents a collage caricature made of inventive bits of realia that extend the metaphors suggested in the text. For example, George Washington is "…made of good deeds." The narrative recounts how he helped extinguish a neighborhood fire at age 67. His "portrait" has eyes made of small resin-coated American flags that reflect enough light to make them twinkle. Thomas Jefferson is made of "comfortable shoes"; Andrew Jackson, "hot tempers"; Theodore Roosevelt, "endless energy"; and Bill Clinton, "enthusiasm." The last spread has official portraits of all the presidents, their birth and death dates, and their years in office. In the introduction, readers are invited to compare the "object portraits" with the realistic images and to fashion collages of their own. Children will be fascinated by the imaginative, humorous artwork and will appreciate the anecdotes that allow them to see the "stuff" that presidents are made of. My son loves this book

My almost 8 year old son is a huge fan of this book as well as "What Cats are Made of." I'm buying this book for him for his birthday. The portraits of the presidents are intriguing to him because they're composed of everyday items that are related to the president being portrayed. Additionally, he has learned presidential facts along the way. A great book. Looking for more like it from this author/illustrator.

Very fun book

This was a great book. My boys became very interested in the presidents and they enjoyed it. We had fun looking at the pictures and figuring out what they were made of. Very creative! The only complaint is that it is not updated and the boys did wonder why Barack Obama was not listed in the back.

I recomend

So this was a good story. The Aspect web is a really cool and unique approach to the skill system, and the story has great potential for a long future. The main character is pretty fun, can't wait to see how he reacts to combat situations. Hopefully the next volume will come out all at once, but also really soon at the same time. Fingers crossed.

I really enjoy the genre and what the author is doing with it. No generic fantasy setting with a harem for once. Though a bit short, miles better than most of the other litrpg offerings.

I like the stories

I like the stories. A little short, but I think it worth the money.
I do wish the character build was not so in-depth. It felt like I was reading a technical guide on how to build the best character. Sure there were a couple of good bits hidden in there and it stress how the Character was detailed oriented (good). But it felt so long and dry.

A genre bending tour de force

Focusing on an unexplored corner of Hemingway's life, Simmons combines a spy story with an historical novel which I read straight through. He creates characters we can identify with and care about at the same time that he acquaints us with a fully textured portrait of Hemingway and insights into J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI. Simmons is one of the few writers that can create a compelling story in any genre he chooses. I have read every book he has written. Crook Factory is of the same caliber as the others I put at the top of his work: Phases of Gravity, Hyperion, Summer of Night, and Children of the Night. FBI agent Joe Lucas, the story telling main character, is someone I want to know more about. Cameo appearances by Ian Fleming, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergmann and Marlene Dietrich set just the right atmosphere for a stylish spy story. And the action scenes are riveting. I highly recommend this book.

Simmons' Best

I'm a fan of Dan Simmons. His standout books, for me, are Hyperion, Carrion Comfort, and Crook Factory. Crook Factory edges the others out. Sure, I like my sci-fi hard, and I suppose a book like this, based in 95% fact, has the realism I crave. But it's more than that. This book is gold. It achieves perfect congruence. It persists in the mind long after the final words. Heck, it made me want to learn Spanish, read Hemingway, and become a novel writer, to boot. I wish one out of 10 books I read were as good as Crook Factory.

Dan Simmon's Has Written Much Better Books!

The Crook Factory is about the semi-covert intelligence operations which Ernest Hemmingway coordinated in Cuba for the War effort in 1942. The events during this period are recounted by a fictional FBI agent who is assigned by J. Edgar Hoover to keep an eye on Hemmingway and make sure that any 'real' intelligence makes it back to Washington.
As always Dan Simmons employs a very tactile writing style which puts the reader in the center of the action. He does an excellent job of blurring the lines between his artistic embellishment and the actual events which took place during this time. He makes nice use of real people, e.g. J. Edgar Hoover, Ian Fleming, Marlene Dietrich and others, to provide authenticity to the book. Thankfully enough, in his afterword, he lets the reader in on the secret of which parts were fact and which were fiction.
I should mention that Dan Simmons is one of my all-time favorite authors. Everything he writes I end up reading eventually. Unlike many current-day authors he jumps across genres, Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, in an adroit manner. Like Simmons' The Fires of Eden, a book about Mark Twain's adventures in Hawaii, this book falls into category of Historical Fiction, i.e. real events told in a fictional way to make them more palatable to a modern-day audience.
Compared to others in that genre, of which I must admit some unfamiliarity, I guess The Crook Factory stands quite well. But for me, compared to the best of his other works, it wasn't that exciting. The whole exercise reminded me a research project on Hemmingway gone awry.
Strangely enough I have noticed a recent tendency of some of my favorite authors to broach related subjects. In particular, Ernest Hemmingway (The Hemmingway Hoax by Joe Haldeman) and Cryptography (Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson).
If you want to get a feel for how great a writer Dan Simmons can be this is NOT the place to start. May I suggest Carrion Comfort or Hyperion? I think you will enjoy them much more.

It appears that they are unable to focus their eyes on the object mentioned in the text. The illustrations are accompanied by dull, repetitious sentences: "See the. . ." and "Look at the. . . ." Also, it's disturbing to find young children directed to "See the sun." The book does offer an adult appendix with a diagram of the eye and a technical explanation of how the eye works. Preschool Teacher Must Have!

There are just enough words on a page to get the message accross without your pre-schoolers losing interest. At the end of the book there is a nice diagram of the parts of the eye and brief discriptions of their functions. A must have. I am looking forward to owning the rest of the series on the senses.

Engaging pictures and text for little ones

I used this series of books with a daycare class. The kids loved them. The pictures are engaging, and the text is a fun way to introduce children to the senses. Each book contains further pictures and explanations about the mechanics of the body, i.e. the nose, ears, tongue, which are great for children who are still curious when the book is done.

This is the quintessential book for riding dirt bikes. Gary's methods teach riders the core skills (many of which are counterintuitive) that translate into advanced techniques with practice. I started riding in my thirties, and as an occasional weekender have always felt a few steps behind in my understanding. This book breaks down all aspects of riding and, with practice, opens up all the mysteries that lead to more confidence and ultimately, smoother, faster more confident riding. My 11 yr old son and I have read through this book several times AND taken classes at the Washington State franchise of Motoventures, and had a blast. We will continue to use this curriculum and take more classes.

Great for beginners not novice or expert.

I was expecting more advanced techniques and information that would be helpful for an advanced rider. Unfortunately most of this book was written for neophytes and people who had barely ever seen a motorcycle before. That's not to say that there weren't helpful tidbits for experienced riders but not enough there to justify the price of the book when compared to other choices like The Art of Trail Riding by Paul clipper.

If you are new to motorcycling buy this book if you are an advanced rider buy Paul Clipper's book.
