Now available in a flexi format, this book is a magnificent survey of watercolour masterpieces from artists such as Turner, Blake, Constable, and Whistler. This beautiful volume documents an important moment in the history of the watercolour, as its practitioners moved from the tinted drawings to the creation of fully fledged works of art that rivaled oil paintings in their expressiveness and technical brilliance. With its rolling hills, cloud-laden skies and ever-shifting light, Britain was the perfect setting for such a revolution, as artists packed sketchbooks, brushes and paints, and headed for the countryside. Authors Wilton and Lyles document the evolution of the British watercolour, from the more classically inspired eighteenth-century landscapes to the vivid experiments in Naturalism and Romanticism, with their concomitant studies in light and atmosphere. Over 300 exquisite reproductions allow readers to appreciate the delicate colours and fine lines of these important works, while the authors' authoritative and eminently readable texts enhance the overall experience of witnessing the birth of an independent medium, and some of the most breathtaking examples of watercolours the world has ever known.

Lots and Lots of Watercolor paintings....Wonderful book!
By D. Tholen
What a wonderful book. This book is filled with pictures of paintings. There isn't a lot of information on the different paintings, which is great for me, I wanted to see the paintings. The intro is about 30 pages, then the book presents the art; - in other reviews I read some feel the post card or index size is disappointing, but for me to see the volume of work this book has I found it a plus. So from page 30 to page 264 are pages of art with the exception of pages introducing the next section of style. One of the best books I have bought!

a great number of watercolour artists great works

325+ mostly colour plates plus, about a dozen black and white intro plates. No foldouts or the like but many full page plates and most others are 2 to a page. The concentration is obviously the more famous painter but 75 or so artists total. So, plenty to decide if you want the more expensive individual books (I already bought Miles Birket Foster from viewing this and other collections). Of course J.M.W. Turner has perhaps 20 examples. Peter De Wint, John Sell Cotman, David Cox, John Constable, Thomas Girten, Francis Towne, and Paul Sandby, just to name a few. I also remember a few by William Blake, 2 different Cozens, James Whistler, Edward Lear, and singles by Gainsborough, Birket Foster, David Roberts, Rowlanson, and a host of others. Perhaps the most memerable plate was "the destruction of pharoah". Its colour was superb. This book definitely added to my British Art Collection. There were at least 40 artists whose name I had not heard (about 1/2) thus giving me a host of artists to consider....shu
