About the Author

Dennis Dresang is Professor Emeritus of Public Affairs and Political Science and founding director of the La Follette School of Public Affairs. His research focuses on state politics, public personnel management, and community issues. He has contributed to public service in a variety of ways: directing a research and public service seminar of La Follette School students examining community health issues and youth violence, chairing two major gubernatorial task forces, and serving on numerous tribal and local government commissions on human resource management issues.

Good, not the best, but good

I'm in a graduate program that is why I bought this book. I work in nonprofit but in the service delivery area and I dont know much about personnel and HR. I thought the class/book would be boring, but I have learned a lot about HR and personnel resource because of this book (and the class)

I think the previous reviewer overstated the perceived gender biases and comments but they are not as strong as the reviewer makes them out to be. Honestly, the reviewer missed the meat of the book and hamstrung themselves on their own issues, ignoring why the book exsists.

The book begins with introducing personnel management in govt, necessity and concepts/theories. Moves into historical background of political patronage, into merit system, Pendelton Act and Civil Rights Acts of 64, 78. Then into personnel rights, rights of management, theories of productivity and motivation (Maslow, etc) Then it explores most importantly the concept of HR planning, integrating into budgets and strategic planning (something I wouldnt have considered) and their reliance on one another (probably the best part of the book)

It delves into performance evaluation, hiring practices, affirmative action and equal employment rules/regulations (not specific, general) employee needs, and collective bargaining.

In this day/age of contracting and unions, being able as a public manager to manage HR to the point that the mission is getting done and people are happy and productive, is probably one of the most important things we can do when working in the public sector.

The book is effective in its writing, uses real-world examples and yes, sometimes its biased in overstating the lack of women/minorities in some sectors, military issues and other things. But to focus on that over what the book intends to do is rather petty.

Only complaint? Price- $106 is steep for this but since its a textbook, things get rather inflated sometimes in that realm

This book presents a comprehensive overview of optical metrology for thin film thickness determination by optical means, from electrodynamic basics, and hardware components, to methods of measurement and evaluation. The author, an expert in the field with both academic and industrial experience, concentrates on the spectral reflectance measurement with miniaturized spectrometers, one of the most flexible techniques for inline and offline thickness determination.

About the Author
Dr. Michael Quinten works as Head of Research and Development Sensors at FRT GmbH in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. Having obtained his diploma degree and Ph. D. in physics (1989) at the University of Saarland, Saarbruecken, Germany, he joined the Technical University RWTH Aachen in 1990 to work as a physics fessor. He then spent four years at several universities in Graz (Austria), Chemnitz, Aachen, Saarbruecken and Bochum (Germany). During his academic career, he authored 50 scientific publications on optical properties of nanoparticles, nanoparticle materials, and aerosols. In 2001, he joined the ETA-Optik GmbH, Germany, where he first worked in research and development of integrated optics components, and later became a product manager in the Colour and Coatings Division. During this period, he became expert in optical layer thickness determination. In 2007, he moved to FRT GmbH where he is responsible for the optical sensor technology division. About the Author
Ben Rawlence's first book Radio Congo was published to critical acclaim by One World in 2012 and chosen by the Economist as a Book of the Year. A graduate of SOAS and the University of Chicago, Ben has dedicated much of the past ten years to working as a researcher for Human Rights Watch. Informative and Important Read

Excellent, interesting, and easy to read. I'm a teacher in a school with many Somali refugee students and while taking Somali classes through community ed. the teacher (who was from Dadaab camp) recommended it. I think the book and Rawlence's experiences with the people in the book help most of us who have minimal knowledge of the situation gain some perspective on the refugee experience and the many challenges we never think about. It's hard to imagine growing up and living in an area the geographical size of New Orleans with 400,000+ others and no building permits near war torn areas where no one wants you, not the Kenyan government or the largely controlled territories of Al-Shabaab. Google image Dadaab to get an idea of what the camps look like. If you want to gain some perspective on the situation in Somalia and refugee experiences in general, this is a must read!

What it is really like to be a refugee in a camp.

Never have I gotten to know refugee camp residents so well as in this book. I am not an aid worker so I haven't had real-world experience, but as far as what you can get from a book this is the best I have read. I have read other books written by aid workers that describe the experience for them, but Ben Rawlence has made this book 98% about the story of the refugee camp residents - from their perspective. He evidently got to know the people he wrote about very well and very meticulously documented their stories. He then tells their stories very well. He also had each of the people review what he wrote about them (or actually read to them what he wrote) to make sure that his description of their suffering, joys, frustration, pain, and thoughts were all accurate. If you want to know what really goes on in a refugee camp, (and some of the international forces that drive the camp policy), and what compels a people to take refuge in a camp (and to leave it) this is the best book you can read.

Trials of Endurance

I completed this book left with a feeling of profound sadness. This was an eye-opening account of what these people endure on a daily basis - war surrounding them, lack of food, privacy, the elements, and stuck right in the middle of the inevitable tug of war regarding politics. This should be required reading.
Just this week my church sponsored a family of 13, I believe, who had been living in a refugee camp for 19 years. They now have housing thanks to members of the congregation who answered the call for assistance. The culture shock will be something they will all have to come to terms with, but I can only imagine their joy.

Just a warning for NR readers, this is not a "new" book. It was originally published in 2001. I did enjoy it back then and felt it was written in her normal standard. She has written so much that now she revisits and revises her plots. I still enjoy her talent, but not enough to pay $7 for a Kindle book. Penquin needs to realize that there are so many other options to previously published books that they are really shooting themselves in the pocketbook when they insist charging full price. If they can sell paperbacks at SAM's for $5, then Amazon should certainly be able to get their clients the same deal. Shame on both of you.

Reprint!!!

I try to carefully check to be sure I'm not getting a reprint of an older book. Well, this one is a reprint and I'm very disappointed. It doesn't come close to being as interesting as her newer books, I didn't bother finishing it. I really hate getting a reprint of an older book, feel like I've been "taken". Bummer...

The best book on the "ART" of handicapping written to date.

Mark Cramer has written the most thought provoking tome I've read. There are many excellent books on the "SCIENCE" of handicapping. But this book brings home the the reality that races are won by flesh and blood animals prepared by mortals (trainers) who are fraught with their own strengths and weaknessses.Anyone who extrapolates figures from services or computer programs water down the past performance to a number. Predicting the future(handicapping the "ART"), is far more involved in "cycles". This book is a must read for all serious handicappers

Form cycle analysis has become mainstream for handicappers of horse racing and Cramer's book here is probably the most complete on the subject. He discusses what to look for in identifying cycles from horse past performances, and includes material on how trainers fall into cycles and patterns of winning and losing as well. His methods will always have a place in the game because you will never duplicate Cramer's observations with computer programs. Cramer's material is always well written and easy to understand for students of the game.

A must have for any handicapper

This was the first book I read from Mark Cramer, it introduced me to a whole new way of looking at the races. Before I read this I was in the slump of my life and couldn't pick a decent winner to save my life. Cramer's ideas of looking for patterns and trends in past performances and trainers' habits, as well as the importance of pedigree and wagering value, highlight this great read. Also the last part of the book is a workshop where you can put Cramer's ideas to use. After I finished this book I immediately picked up Cramer's "Value Handicapping," and went on to have the best summer at Del Mar that I have ever had in 20 years! Have now almost read all of Cramer's books and wish he would write more because to me he is the most brilliant mind in handicapping and especially value betting.

The best book of its kind - by far!

Other sabermetric books have been written in the last few years, The Book is the best one by far. It is chock full of information, results from research and answers a lot of interesting baseball questions. The three authors, Tom Tango, Mitchel Lichtman and Andrew Dolphin have academic backgrounds and work for major league teams as employees or consultants. They use statistical methods to extract and comprehend information from a massive database of baseball games.

For the layman, there may be too much math throughout the book. However, they do a fantastic job of summarizing each idea in plain English at the end of each section. For example, in chapter 2 on hot and cold streaks, after presenting data, explaining their process and interpreting results, they summarize the section with "Knowing that a hitter has been in or is in the midset of a hot or cold streak has little predictive value. Always assume that a player will hit at his projected norm (adjusted for the park, weather, and pitcher he is facing), regardless of how he has performed in the very recent past. A player's recent history may be used as a tiebreaker."

Managers, players, fans and the media often put too much emphasis on results from small samples sizes. The authors warn against making this mistake. "One of the pervasive themes of this book is the danger of inferring too much from too little by underestimating the influence of randomness". For example, they summarize a section on pitcher-batter matchups with: "Knowing a player will face a particular opponent, and given the choice between that player's 1,500 PA (plate appearances) over the past three years against the rest of the league or twenty-five PA against that particular opponent, look at the 1,500 PA. "

They aren't afraid to point out when general baseball wisdom is correct. On starting pitchers, they write, "pitchers perform best with five days of rest, and worst with three days of rest. To manage our entire starting rotation effectively, four days of rest seems to be the optimal point. The current MLB pattern of scheduling the starting rotation works."

This book is at the top of my recommendation list for thinking baseball fans. I'm a bit surprised that I'm the first reviewer of this book on Amazon, since it has been out for three months. The sales ranking (currently #47,000 as I write this review) is disappointing for such an incredible book. The Book deserves to be at the top of the baseball best seller's list.

Authors Illuminate the Guts of Baseball

This is the single most important math-centered analysis of baseball since The Hidden Game of Baseball came out over 20 years ago. I unreservedly recommend it for those already experienced with statistical analysis of baseball (the authors are much better at insight and explaining to the initiated than they are the Dick & Jane bits).

They attack a sequence of important subjects, mostly around game-tactics and, by consequence, roster-construction with hard data. And they are aware of an important bit of knowledge: (a) that not everything is measurable, and (b) that some aspects of the not measurable are important.

One star short of maximum because it's not a page-turner for most readers; the writing is more than adequate, but not energizing, so it's a book most will pick up, read 15 pages, put down to digest.

I'm very glad I read it. This is a keeper even for a limited-shelf-space baseball reader; I'm squeezing it in right next to "Hidden Game".

Good read, terrible publishing

Let me start off by saying the book has very interesting information. However, the publishing part of it was very poor. There are grammatical errors, typos, missing spaces, etc. I am not sure if I got a preliminary version or what but it is just awful.

The book does miss a key idea on the bunting chapter. It does not differentiate between sac bunts and bunts for base hits. Some of the information is a little redundant. I recommend "Baseball Between the Numbers" if you want to keep reading about interesting baseball stats.

Also, the information on this book is a little outdated. It would be interesting to see "The Book 2" or something with more recent numbers

Barb McNinch is not only an excellent professional trainer, she is also an outstanding Rottie person. In this book, McNinch goes far beyond a basic,generic training book and presents the reader with a training program tailormade to the Rottweiler. Readers of this book will come away with a much deeper understanding and appreciation for their Rottweilers, as well as the ability to train their puppies and dogs to truly be good canine citizens. I would highly recommend this book to Rottie owners, as well as owners of Rottie mixes. If the Rottie-mix has taken on any characteristics of the Rottweiler, this book will be of great help.

Barb McNinch KNOWS Rottweilers Are SPECIAL!

A Rottweiler is a VERY special breed of dog! It takes intelligence, patience and dedication to train and love one! And the REWARDS are phenomenal. Barb McNinch has demonstrated that she has all THREE of the above qualities and shares them in her book, "Training Your Rottweiler". Her experience with the breed SHINES THROUGH in print! Not only are her training and problem solving tips extremely useful and SPECIFIC to the breed, but she also clearly outlines and explains the wide variety of activities that Rottweiler owners can engage in with their dogs. This book is VERY MUCH worth the purchase price! And we are EAGERLY waiting for her NEXT BOOK!!!
