This book does not require recent events in the Persian Gulf to make it an essential addition for most public libraries as well as all college libraries. Written by one of the foremost U.S. authorities on energy, it is a major work in the field, replete with enough insight to satisfy the scholar and sufficient concern with the drama and colorful personalities in the history of oil to capture the interest of the general public. Though lengthy, the book never drags in developing its themes: the relationship of oil to the rise of modern capitalism; the intertwining relations between oil, politics, and international power; and the relationship between oil and society in what Yergin calls today's age of "Hydrocarbon Man." Parts of the story have been told as authoritatively before, e.g., in Irvine Anderson's Aramco: The United States and Saudi Arabia ( LJ 7/81), but never in as comprehensive a fashion as here.

Having spent the past 26 years working in the oil, refining and chemical industry, I finally took it upon myself to read this book. While I knew some of the information and history, based on word of mouth and working at multiple different refining companies, I was pleasantly surprised at all the fantastic history, details and information this book contains. It is truly the premier history of the oil industry within the US. An easy read, too - it is engaging, keeps your interest, and presents information at a level that everyone can understand - no need to be an engineer to understand the book. Nice job!

The Prize — Buy the 2008 Edition

The new edition costs the same.

Yergin's prize-winning history stretches from the first Pennsylvania oil rush in 1860 to the crash of world oil prices in 2008, and it all reads like a novel. Well, not quite. The epilogue, which covers the period after the Gulf war in 11 pages, skims along ten times faster than the rest and feels a bit more like a history lesson. But it gives you a balanced view of recent events.

I bought the original version as I started researching energy. Two full bookshelves later, I can tell you, no other book in this field holds a candle to it for fascination and information. I've read complaints about what it doesn't cover so here are some alternatives, but if you want tales of the way greed, ignorance, and cleverness respond to natural wealth and, in turn, shape world history and current global politics, this is your book.

For oil geology and exploration, read Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage (New Edition). Oil industry nitty-gritty: Oil on the Brain: Petroleum's Long, Strange Trip to Your Tank. What to do about OPEC: Carbonomics: How to Fix the Climate and Charge It to OPEC. Alternatives to Oil: Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, Third Edition. Big Oil's power: The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--and What We Must Do to Stop It.

There's no summarizing such a book, but here's the sort of tales he tells. The 1930 discovery of the Black Giant in East Texas nearly destroyed the oil industry, sending prices down to thirteen cents a barrel. After a voluntary shutdown failed, the Governor of Texas sent the Texas Rangers in on horseback. They shut down production and sent prices back up. This led to the Texas Railroad Commission becoming the first government-organized oil cartel — a model for OPEC years later.

As an economist I really appreciate the fact that Yergin gets his economics right. This is crucial for a book about price manipulation, and it's quite uncommon among popular books. For example he understands why the Saudis tried to hold price down in 1979 and why Bush Senior flew to Saudi Arabia in 1986 to try to get them to raise the price back up. Yergen helps you understand exactly why things happen in this topsey-turvey world. In any case, The Prize has been selling like hotcakes for 18 years. Whether you're fascinated by powerful historical forces or disgusted but intrigued by fossil fuel, you won't be disappointed.

I am amazed by how comprehensive and yet fascinating of a history Daniel Yergin has woven together. Perhaps one of the best and most relevant histories I have read. If you are at all concerned about oil's impact on the environment, this is a must read in order to better understand the oil industry and its beginnings. Thank you, Mr. Yergin.

About the Author

Edward H. Judge and John W. Langdon are professors of history at Le Moyne College, where they have team-taught for the last 20 years a two-semester world history course for first-year students as well as courses on modern global history for upper-level students. Judge earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan and spent a year in the USSR as an IREX scholar. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1978, was the college's scholar of the year in 1994 and was awarded the J. C. Georg Endowed Professorship in 1997. Langdon earned his doctorate at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Public Affairs, where he was a national defense fellow. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1971, directed its honors program and was awarded the O'Connell Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1996. Each has been named the college's teacher of the year and has chaired its department of history. They have written or edited eight books: three in collaboration with each other, three as individuals and two in collaboration with other scholars. They love teaching world history, especially to students of diverse backgrounds and interests, and they derive great joy from infecting their students with a passion and enthusiasm for the study of the human past.

Needed for school

I needed this book for school but didn't want to pay school price so I went to amazon and found this! What I didn't like about the book itself is that some of the information is confusing because some of the details are so subtle. You really have to read between the lines. I still recommend buying this book if you need it for class though. Even though the shipping is fast I don't recommend buying it at the last minute.

Honestly, I did not care for this textbook. I felt as though they jumped around too much. I am used to having key words with definitions on the side. It did read as more of a "book" which was nice. But i missed the traditional things an actual textbook brings.

My adventure into the realm of Spirituality

The Little Book of Bleeps: Excerpts from the Award-Winning Movie What the (#$%&) Bleep Do We Know (Purchased on 08/12/2005)

I heard about the low budget movie "What the Bleep Do We Know?" and went to see it in down town Sacramento movie hall. I enjoyed it so much I purchased the film. I tried to talk to my friends about it. I even bought two more films to pass out to my friends. My "flatland" skeptic friends could not believe that I would even want to see such a film. They found everything wrong with it. I felt like Galileo or Copernicus trying to let them know that the sun does not revolve around the earth. I looked at my film at least ten times trying to write down all the words of wisdom emanating from the great thinkers who were scientist and other academics in the film.

Then I found the book "The Little Book of Bleeps" that had all the words I wanted to ponder that were in the film. As I e-mailed more friends about my excitement knowing that "we create our own reality," most of my friends again put the book down by explaining the fallacies of all the great thinkers who were scientist and other academics in the film---But, what do my friends know?

Then I found "Beyond the Bleep" that goes into detail about all the ideas and the thinkers who came up with these ideas. This film "WTBDWK" is about quantum physics, spirituality---and the meaning of life. This ambitious film attempts to answer existential questions such as: What is God? What are emotions? What is the soul? And what we all want to know why are we here?

I was so caught up with quantum physics; I ordered some lectures about quantum physics for the non-scientist from the Teaching Company. That gave me the vocabulary to understand "WTBDWK."

That wasn't enough for me. Amazon.com was advertising the book "The Spiritual Universe, How Quantum Physics Proves The Existence of the Soul." by Fred Alan Wolf, PH.D. one of the scientist in the film. It took me a month to finish the book and now I'm going to read it again. Quantum Physics is mind boggling, but I think it will change the whole direction of science and bring Science into the realm of Spirituality, bring the objective into the subjective. I feel blest that I am moving up the spiritual path intended by the creator. It also proves to me that there is an "Intelligent design."

It's all about possibility...

There will always be skeptics, especially when the topics raised are so controversial. But I would also say to these skeptics that they're missing the point of this entire book and film: possibilitiy. The point is to challenge our minds, to explore the possibilities.

Some critics have focused on the segment where it's stated that the brain doesn't recognize the difference between a real object and the thought of that object. Of course most of us know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. That's not the point here. What we should consider after hearing a statement like this how amazing the human brain is and perhaps study it further.

I know many hard-core scientists shy away from "New Age" ideas and the types of possibiliites presented here. But what this book intends to show is that science and spirituality can be compatible and that an open mind can lead to growth on many levels.

Check out the official "What the Bleep" web site. They recommend books on every topic mentioned in the film. And by the way, only 2 of the scientists in the film/book are associated with Ramtha. And you don't have to believe everything you read or hear in order to find this book (and film) fascinating.

So what's the worst that can come of this? People begin to ask questions and start reading more about science and spirituality. Sounds like a healthy education to me.

Good handbook!

Great accompaniment to the movie that blows your mind. Not only are there great pics in the book, there are great quotes from the movie. This is the movie that keeps you thinking and pondering even after the lights go up. I've seen it three times and plan to buy the DVD when it comes out next year. This movie has helped me re-evaluate how I look at life! Awesome!
