Was disappointed briefly, then greatly inspired

I was surprisingly inspired by John and Teresa Heinz Kerry's new book, This Moment on Earth. This inspiration snuck up on me around the third chapter. Prior to that, I found the book good, well worth reading, but a little bit like just one more book outlining what humans are doing wrong. Starting around the third chapter I realized I was referring to the book in several conversations and several blog diaries and that several of the people and organizations featured in the book I mentally filed away as worth looking into for future political connections, diaries and general research.

In short, almost without my realizing it, John Kerry's book was getting into my brain and inspiring me. The book starts a bit dull but by the end is excellent.

The book was billed as the next step in the evolution of the environmental debate. I was ready for a book that took as given the problems and focused primarily on solutions. And, on exactly the same day I started This Moment on Earth I was reading the February 9th issue of Science, America's most respected scientific journal. And in that issue, the scientific community was doing exactly what John Kerry seemed to be proposing...The overwhelming consensus of scientists, as reported in Science, is that anthropogenic (human-caused) warming is happening and the most optimistic scenarios are not the most likely scenarios. We are in for a rough ride and the time is now to accept the problem and move on to solutions. Shift the debate, people. Let's talk what to DO ABOUT IT.

I was ready for John Kerry's book to carry the same theme...it is time to take as given the problem and move on to solutions.

That isn't quite what I got. And at first I was disappointed. As I read the first two chapters I felt I was reading yet another book that outlined the problem with perhaps a little more emphasis placed on solutions and how individuals and small groups are empowering themselves to fight back.

But by the third chapter I found I was taking the most notice of exactly what the Kerrys WANTED me to notice the most: the people who are fighting back. I think it was the case of Majora Carter and Sustainable South Bronx that finally made me realize that this book was inspiring me because I immediately decided she'd be perfect as an invited speaker for a political group I am involved with. The example of Riverkeeper, where ex-marines decided to patrol our nation's waterways to protect them from polluters, was another "wow" moment. Even radio personality Don Imus and his wife, Deidre, come off inspiring in This Moment on Earth, something I never imagined I'd say. And Chapter 7, discussing energy policy, is the best chapter, showing how right here and now, using existing technology, the city of Portland, OR, as well as companies like Texas Instruments and DuPont are doing EXACTLY what needs to be done to reduce carbon emissions...and doing it while creating jobs and saving money. Chapter 7 shows us that there remain NO EXCUSES for America to continue to avoid taking a leadership role in stopping global warming. All that we lack...is the political leadership on a national level. Kerry shows us that locally there has been considerable leadership by both Democrats and Republicans. But nationally Bush has led us down a path that leads nowhere and that has ceded economic ingenuity to other nations.

Put all this together and you may not have the next step in the evolution of the environmental debate, but you certainly have one more important step forward and one that might have a wider appeal than previous books in this genre.

If you review it, try reading it first!

I am constantly amazed at the vitriol whenever a politician writes a book. Opnions come down on ideological extremes wanting to praise it instantly if the politico is liked, or panned with acid reviews if he's in the other party.

Face it, this is an interesting book. Not the best book on the subject of the environment, but Kerrys' opinions do reflect intelligent thought. To be condemned for their lifestyle and ignore what they are trying to say shows that the reviewer hasn't read the book. i think there is a hypocritical envy of the wealth the Kerry's have because they are democrats and the reviewer is a rightwing ideologue. But if this was a book by, say Cheney, he'd be praised and his obscene wealth and plutocratic politics will be ignored.

Be fair, read the book for the opinions and ideas, weigh them with your own thoughts and beliefs and in all honesty a serious reader and reviewer can always find something worthwhile.

The environment is becoming a more and more important issue and it shouldn't be viewed through soley political ideology. As a country, together we can make progress, but if we are constantly arguing because the idea comes from the other side of the aisle nothing good will ever happen. Compromise, discussion and reason should win in the end.

Well put together, bipartisan book. It covers far more than just global warming, and stresses the importance of fixing the problem ASAP. It includes solutions everyone can use. Everyone should read this book.

This book is an excellent resource for both the seasoned HR/Benefits manager or new-comer to the field of employee benefits. It is a comprehensive yet readable reference guide which covers everything from basic employee benefits, to general benefits planning and administration, to retirement planning and programs.
Although the book is structured like a text book (it has chapter objectives listed, along with study questions) it is very easy to read and understand. The authors provide many tables and charts which illustrate the more complex subject areas.
As an HR Manager, I highly recommend this book as a reference tool for all companies that wish to maximize their employee benefit programs. The wealth of information and practical material contained in this book is invaluable to any sized organization.

Excellent resource for benefit professionals-6th Edition

I've recently re-entered the employee benefits field after a number of years away and felt I needed a reference guide to help me identify new laws and regulations as well as coverage changes. This book is a fabulous resource. It covers benefits A to Z. Each topic I have come across in my day-to-day work is discussed in this book. This book is perfect for people in their first benefits position and well as the veteran benefits professional. When the 7th Edition comes out, I'll definitely buy it.

This text has added a tremendous amount of knowledge to my research related to Metacognition. As a teacher and coordinator of an after school tutoring program for American Indian children, I am truly interested in turning my students into expert learners. Plenty of good research and techniques.

Broad Coverage / Introduction

A well written book and great introduction into digital/audio broadcast incl. Video Conference and compression techniques (incl. H.264). Level: beginner / intermediate. The writing styled is clear and non-technical readers should understand it quickly.

But what's being technical? Some would argue that understanding the different levels of H.264 is technical (not covered in detail). Or understanding 'calculating network bandwidth' (covered on 2 pages). It's certainly not a book for techies in the field. I would consider a hard-core technical book like 'Peer-to-Peer Video Streaming'.

The only topic that to me was not properly covered is P2P. It was expecting more on this especially since P2P is mentioned on the subtitle. But that's a small detail of an otherwise great book.

Easy reading, no beef

This is very well written book. For an beginner in the digital video/audio broadcast field like me, the book provides a good overview of the various video and audio standards as used by broadcasters and telecomms and internet service providers. The writing style used is very clear and the diagrams used also support the text.

The downside of the book is that it is not detailed enough me (my background is in computers/telecomms). For example, RTP, the protocol used at the hard of digital media streaming, merits only three pages. I have the impression that the book's audience is too broad - the book attempts to address users, broadcasters, and telecomms engineers. There is no detailed explanation of how the networking protocols work. The video/audio protocols are explained in some detail, but in the case of the network protocol already mentioned, RTP, no details are given, and no reference for further study is given.

In summary, the book is good as an easy introductory read, computer professionals especially will be want to look elswewhere.

Great debut novel!

I empathized with Patty from the first page to the last. The ice cream scene was painfully familiar to me. Patty's not a perfect heroine, and not always pretty - in her thoughts or her actions - but always entertaining. There was a lot of depth in this debut novel and a lot of emotion. I especially admired Patty's determination, and I rooted for her all through the book. The ending is one of the best I've read. It's a terrific debut and I'm looking forward to the next James Bay novel.

What a lovely story. Like Patty I have struggled with my weight my whole life. It tells you that love is more important then anything else in the world no matter what your size. I love that there are other books about James Bay and look forward to the next one. What a wonderful summer story. Thank you Ms. Paterka.

A Gritty Life-Like Read

Growing up "the fat sister" I can relate to Patty in so many ways. It is hard when you see yourself as something different. Sam is such a great character and reminds me so much of my own husband. He is the perfect man who sees Patty as the wonderful beautiful person she truly is. Fatty Patty is a great debut book and although I will say there were times I wanted to put it down because I saw a bit too much of myself in Patty I kept reading in the hopes that Patty would see herself differently. Patty descends into to some dark places, for lack of a better description.

One would expect the best-funded intelligence service in the world to produce good results, but, unfortunately, the U.S. intelligence community continues to commit avoidable blunders (witness the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade). Intended as a provocative manifesto, this book calls for fundamental changes in the way that intelligence is collected, processed, and distributed by the U.S. government. Selected case studies are presented to illustrate problems and possible improvements. The authors call for more openness, a less hierarchical structure, and better cooperation with the private sector (which has lots of money and can respond faster). Continually evolving technological challenges will probably be overcome since this is what Americans do best, but it is hard to change a large bureaucracy with an entrenched worship of secrecy, unless it receives a giant, costly shock (e.g., the bombing of Pearl Harbor). The authors, who both started their careers at the CIA, previously collaborated on Strategic Intelligence for American National Security. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

The Next President, and Next DCI, Need to Read This Book

This book dedicates itself entirely to fixing the underlying process of intelligence. The authors place intelligence in the larger context of information, and draw a plethora of useful comparisons with emerging private sector capabilities and standards. They place strong emphasis on the emerging issues (not necessarily threats) related to ethnic, religious, and geopolitical confrontation, and are acutely sensitive to the new power of non-governmental organizations and non-state actors. The heart of their book is captured in three guidelines for the new process: focus on understanding the consumer's priorities; minimize the investment in fixed hardware and personnel; and create a system that can draw freely on commercial capabilities where applicable (as they often will be). Their chapter on the failure of the bureaucratic model for intelligence, and the need to adopt the virtual model-one that permits analysts to draw at will on diverse open sources-is well presented and compelling. Their concluding three chapters on analysis, covert action, and secrecy are solid professional-level discussions of where we must go in the future.

The U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) continues to be mired in the past despite the so-called reforms implemented internally since the end of the Cold War or imposed from without by Congress in the wake of the 9/11 catastrophe. Here is a book that offers a path to real reform based not so much on structural changes as changes in the intelligence production process. It makes a strong case for decentralization of intelligence production and the use by the IC of outside experts to assist in the analysis of specific intelligence subjects. The type of reforms that Berkowitz and Goodman advocate would give the members of the IC that elusive, but vitally important, attribute of flexibility to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Unfortunately, the kind of reformation these authors argue for would require a major change in the internal culture of the primary agencies of the IC.

For example, members of the IC now make extensive use of private, commercial contractors even for core missions such as intelligence analysis, but only within an elaborate bureaucratic framework designed to fill vacancies, not improve the analytic processes. The use of outside subject matter experts from academia and the business world hired for specific analytic projects on an ad hoc basis as advocated in this book really goes against the basic culture of the intelligence bureaucracy. It is true that the National Intelligence Council (NIC) and some National Intelligence Officers (NIO) within the NIC have resorted to outside experts, but this is scarcely representative of the IC as a whole. Indeed in this reviewer's experience, outside experts of any sort are about as welcome in the IC as women are in the monasteries of Mount Athos. So clearly this and the other elements of the reformation program offered in this book would require profound cultural changes within the IC.

Robert D. Steele in a series of books such as "The New Craft of Intelligence" has attempted to develop some of the ideas presented in this book into specific practical changes affecting the way the U.S. produces intelligence. Steele's work would be a good follow on to this book.

Godd overview, poor suggestions

I enjoyed the broad overview of the generation and use of intelligence information. I found the suggestions of how to change the intelligence system too vague, driven by the management technique of the hour and unworkable. The authors suggestion that agencies drop specialized groups and pulls special teams together when needed. This may be workable in the short run, but in the long run there will be no deep experts as there are today. It takes time and money to develop these experts and only the government can plan to develop these experts, that may or may not ever be fully utilized. The authors site NASA's faster, better, cheaper management, a style that in my opinion is none of these, as something the intelligence community should adopt. It would be alright for someone to site this, but you must also site the numerous failures of the method. I got the feeling that if the book had been written ten years ago, Japanese management methods would have been sited as useful, they have of course fallen from favor. Cold fusion and the work that was done by innumerable physics to at the time of the first announcement as the way the intelligence community should attach important new questions that are time sensitive. Have hundreds of experts across the intelligence community bear upon a question as a way to get a quick, high quality answer. What the authors don't understand is all those physicists were working for free or on someone else's dime. All those hundreds of people will need to charge against this new effort, enough to break any budget, not to mention the poor chance of getting a high quality answer. So, the book is a good airing of the issues, but not much at solving the problems.
