More thorough clinical diagnostic correlations than ever before. Excellent!!!

Hi,

Initially I was skeptical whether Professor Greenman's new edition would be any thing new. I was hoping, but I was cautious. And I recieved the book 3-4 days ago, and after reading each chapter, I am thoroughly satisfied, 5 stars. As Lisa DeStefano has placed valuable clinical information, 'clinical pearls', in this 4th edition that makes understanding and interpreting the positive and negative physical examination findings much more understandable. Actually, I did not get the chance to attend one of Professor Greenman's 'Clinical Pearls' seminars from Michigan State University before he retired, and I even asked if he would write a book on the topic. However, understandably Professor Greenman declined, as he is retired. That is why I am very pleased to read this new edition as it is full of useful information.

p.s. As you can see I am bias towards the Greenman Approach, this happened after I attended one of his seminars in the United States, it was of excellent quality. Also, I wanted to let those who are interested know that Michigan State University (MSU) is now selling DVD's by Professor Greenman (Muscle Energy Technique, High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust, Myofascial, and Functional)on osteopathic technique, application and philosophy. If you would like a recommendation, they are the highly recommended, 5 star. And, after reading this latest edition, I have found out that Michigan State University (MSU)has post graduate courses on osteopathic philosophy and technique, which I will attend after seeing the quality of the book, DVD's and Professor Greenman's last ever seminar in Arizona, which I was fortunate enough to attend in January 2010.

I found the text excellent for developing treatment strategies for a wide variety of presentations. I wish the text would incorporate even more of the clinical pearls in conjunction with the many techniques defined in the text.

Perhaps the Definitive Work on Benchrest Shooting

This is the 4th or 5th book I have, dealing with modern benchrest shooting. If this book were to be given an "A," the second-best would get a "C." Shooters have been quoting from this work since it came on the market, and it is clear why. It's success is not entirely due to the credentials of Tony Boyer, who is far and away the most successful benchrest shooter of our time. It is worth noting that editing, artwork and production exhibited in my hard-cover version are far above average. That said, there are some minor problems the proofreading missed (for example, jewelers' "loop") and a there is mistake in one of the computer-generated renderings. None of the problems take away from the value of the work.

The book is not offered as a scientific treatise, and the focus is on "know how" rather than "know why," which is what the readers would want and need. There is only enough science to illustrate and communicate various points. Controversial topics are dealt with in a refreshing way. The author restates the conventional reasoning, states that it is only the conventional reasoning, resists entering into the debate and simply states whether he himself uses the devices or techniques.

There are a few paragraphs in the section dealing with match shooting technique that alone are worth the cost of the book. Happily, one finds very few "war stories" of the type often seen in the final chapters of similar books.

Carl A. Grant is the Hoefs-Bascom Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is also former President of the National Association for Multicultural Education.

Terrible Book

We live in a time when people are more concerned about equity than education. That is what this book is about. It is a book published by a liberal to advance his/their agenda of supposedly encouraging multiculturalism. In reality, it is actually a book about evening out everyone's education so they are all at the same level so the system is fair. Encouraging students to excel is forbidden because then there wouldn't be equity. Books like this are the reason public education is failing in the USA.

Max Reger (1873-1916) was a celebrated German composer, performer on piano and organ, and conductor. Well known for his compositions for keyboards and orchestra, Reger worked during the crucial decades when Western music transformed itself from the misty veil of Romanticism and Impressionism to the more hard-edged modernism that would prevail in the 20th century. Less well known are his writings about music and the composer's craft. Although he wrote a major book on music theory published in 1903 (and translated into English a year later), his extended essays on composition, his fellow composers, and analysis have never appeared before in English. Christopher Anderson, a noted Reger scholar, has gone back to original manuscripts as well as the published versions of these writings to produce definitive new texts. Additionally, Anderson has written an opening essay placing Reger's writings and music in the context of his time.

I have to learn german

The title of this book is, "Writings of Max Reger," but there is a pitiful lack of his writing here. Let me be more specific. Amazon advertised the book as having 184 pagers, and this is true, but as it turns out, the first 43 pages are the editors introduction (I-XLIII) and the last 34 are notes and an index. This leaves 107 pages: 9 pages are completely blank, 4 have a single title heading and 24 are more comments from the editor, and writings by other persons. This leaves 70 pages and of this number only 42 are fully devoted to Reger writings.

I regret to say it, but this book seems a perfunctory "publish or parish" sham. It is in reality a 43 page essay with examples of Reger's writing supporting the commonplace that the composer had a bad time with the musical critics of his day and that he could be counted on for some funny remarks.

Sal Restivo is Professor of Sociology and Science Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is co-editor of Math Worlds: Philosophical and Social Studies of Mathematics (1992) and author of Science, Society, and Values: Toward a Sociology of Objectivity (1994).

I love this book simply because it give and idea how technology, science and society are all linked to each other and how they impact to our lives. I also have professor who teaching me this class and she also wrote this book. Recommend it! by the way kindle version more comfortable to read because navigation thru chapters.

as an introduction this is a horrible failure

As introductory works go, this book is terrible. While the authors are honest about the fact that they are sociologists, they are not at all clear on what kinds of biases this results in in their treatment. Although they manage passingly well to enthuse the reader for the field, they over-sociologize almost everything, spend large amounts of text on remarks that are either not pertinent to the discussion or too vague to be meaningful statements, while they meanwhile quickly mention other topics that are far more controversial than they imply.
They suggest that they do not want to get "caught up" in the science wars, but do suggest that they see science as to be understood only in social terms, while being largely uncritical of the notion that the social is just as much of a social construct as everything else, preferring to reify it instead, as though it is the "rock bottom" of useful/meaningful analysis of the social, intersubjective world. They try to mention far too many subjects that they don't actually treat in any amount of detail, which is very noticeable once you've noticed it once or twice, and similarly their argumentation for asserting that certain processes play a role is almost always horribly vague, while the examples they supply are often not even to the point.
Basically, it reads as though they have no idea yet how to construct a convincing argument, or that they prefer giving vague hints (about how "power structures" control, or determine, or whatever a field, as though all power structures really are the same, have the same influence, etc.) over actual analysis. This, however, is not the way to do science. It's fine that influence is hard to measure directly, but this does not mean that you have a licence to write anything. Insightful analysis is a virtue in any part of life (except 'religion', i.e. Dogma).
While the authors seem more or less sympathetic, I cannot conscionably recommend their book, and especially not as an introduction into STS.

Not a very good read

For starters, this was a required textbook for a college course I was taking and the instructor is an author.
This book is mostly a cause and effect piece on technology and 75% of it is common sense like "typewriters destroyed job opportunities for scribes." The other 25% is opinion that is presented as fact and backed up with almost no evidence.

As I was forced to read this garbage, I just kept getting the notion that the authors thought what they were writing was so incredibly profound instead of it being the most obvious concepts I have ever had to read.

It did however ship very quickly and was in nice condition and stuff. This would have been a great experience if I had just accidentally gotten a Dr. Suess book instead because it might have actually broaden my knowledge base more so.

I'd recommend this book to a 10-12 year old with a great vocabulary because the concepts are geared for that age but the word choice is a little pretentious. But if you have to take this for a college course I would just search for it online and use CTRL-F whenever it gets referenced in assignments. I took the class online and wish that I had done that.

Best guide to instructional systems design

This is the best guide to a systems approach to instructional design that has ever been written. I worked and taught in the field of instructional technology for 40 years, and I never found a better guide. Romiszowski includes a number features that have never been surpassed in later works, and there are many good ones.

For one, he ends each conceptual stage with a list of questions that should be asked at this stage. Everyone says that the instructional systems design should be a heuristic process, but Romi actually does it.

For another, he exhibits a depth of understanding of the categories of learning that was far ahead of his time in 1981, and in some regards is still ahead of educational practice. Specifically, he identifies "interpersonal skills" as a missing category; he underlines how important this category is; then he suggests a way to fill in this category. He also identifies a weakness in the taxonomy of physical skills. Later in his career Romiszowski filled this gap by developing a complete taxonomy of psychomotor skills. That alone should enshrine his name in education history. But that's just 1% of what he has done.

He is a master and well deserves to be taken seriously.

Unique book

This is not one more book, but the foundation of a theory not yet understood and much more not yet accepted. It opens new frontiers in biology and life sciences. The role of electromagnetism is vital to the concept of life. Each cell should not be considered and studied as one unit, but as part of one organism (my though is that maybe the one organism should be considered as part of one ecosystem). If you are trying to answer how external electromagnetic fields can affect a living organism, then you will find unique the idea that field intensity is not the criterion. Weak fields can be more important than strong fields.
Anyway, this book is classical and rare. It revolutionizes life sciences, enters unexplored regions. If you are a true scientist take it, if you can find it.

Meaty Survey and Suggestions for Frurther Research

This book is an excellent monograph that discusses the role of the electromagnetic fields and waves in the phenomena of Life. The first chapter is a summary of the relevant results from electromagnetic theory pertaining to the interaction of fields and waves with material media. Only the results are quoted and the reader is referred to specialized texts such as Landau & Lifshitz "Electrodynamics of Continuous Media".

In the second part of this book, by far the largest, the author surveys and summarizes almost 50 years of experimental research - until 1967 - on the electromagnetic phenomena and Life. These experiments cover the interactions of static and dynamic fields with biological macro-molecules, unicellular organisms, plants, animals, humans as well as the intrinsic electromagnetic phenomena to the living systems (such as skin surface electric fields).

After reading this section, I was left with no doubt as to the reality of the influence of external electromagnetic fields and waves on biological systems.

The third part of this book is a discussion of potentially productive areas for further research in the light of the common results of these experiments. Here the author suggests a number of broad areas of research together with a bit of speculation about what could be explained by the results of those future researches. In effect, he is recommending a research program in this part of the book.

The book may be read profitably by anyone with the following background:

1- Advanced High-School Level Biology
2- Electromagnetic Theory at the level of a 3rd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering
3- Modern Physics at the level of a 2nd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering

One feature of this book is 47 pages of references to original scientific literature - many of them unfortunately in Russian.

I agree with the first reviewer and I think this book is worth reading from cover to cover.

Highly recommended as great scientific monograph.
