A classic of 1960's comic art at its best!

Although many remember Steve Ditko's art work on Spider-man, a character he illustrated from the beginning for about 2 years, it is his work on Marvel's Doctor Strange that stands out.
This is a rare hardcover (never out in paperback) collection from 1992 reprinting the master mage's earliest stories - from Strange Tales 110-111 & 114-141, from 1963-1966.
The quality of the color reproduction is excellent, which is great as some of the early Marvel Comics' wildest colors and backgrounds were used and depicted when Dr. Strange journeyed to some other dimension to fight another (evil) magician.
Some of the Marvel Masterworks library are relatively slim but you get your money's worth with this one - 272 pages of mystical combat with Dormammu, Baron Mordo, Loki and others.
Sure, other reviewers are correct in pointing out the dialog and stories may seem corny to some raised on the "grittier, more realistic" stories from the 80's, but I feel that is comparing apples to oranges - like comparing say the movies Gladiator to Ben Hur - both classics but products of their times.
I recommend this as among the best of Marvel Masterworks library. Shame you can't still buy it over the counter at your friendly neighborhood comic book store.

The wildest, weirdest and best comic book art of the 1960's.

I recently read Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and while doing so encountered this passage: "...and Kesey is old and haggard and his face is lopsided...and then Sandy looks and Kesey is young, serene, and his face is lineless, and round and smooth as a baby's as he sits for hours on end reading comic books, absorbed in the plunging Steve Ditko shadows of Dr. Strange attired in capes and chiaroscuro, saying: "How could they have known that this gem was merely a device to bridge DIMENSIONS!" I couldn't have said it better myself. This is the cosmic stuff that shaped the dreams of a generation.

Wonderful intro to Dr. Strange

This volume is a wonderful introduction to Dr. Strange, containing the classic original stories of my most favorite comic book hero. We also get the great first-time intros of some of the best villains--Baron Mordo, the Dread Dormammu, and Umar the Unrelenting.
The 'modern' reader, won't necessarily appreciate a lot of these things when compared to the current generation of writing in other comic books (like the edgy X-Men, Avengers, etc). After all, this was written in the 60's, so it's sometimes cheesy and has simplistic plots. But for a Dr. Strange fan, this volume is a necessary and refreshing addition.

I listen to this man's podcast and it was truly helpful. This lead me to buying his book for my kindle and if you follow his exercises this book helps you develope tha discipline that many, many people are looking for. Its like anything though it is work. Great book great podcast worth buying and begining to develop the mental strength that many of us lack and seek.

Big disappointment from the "ridiculously simple" series...

I generally like material put out by the "ridiculously simple" series. This text is a dud. The material covered is very shallow. I found the writing tedious and overly simplistic. If you want a good foundation in biochem go with Lehninger's Biochemistry along with Basic Medical Biochemistry by Marks, Marks, and Smith.
I understand that this was not intended to be a detailed biochem text. However, the material here is beyond "simplistic". It is quite insufficient to appraise one with facts and or knowledge.

Too simplified for those needing more background in biochem.

I found it hard to make the jump in the author's simplified analogies. I needed more basic information about lipid land. I was looking for simplified description of biochemical processes not an overly simplified generalization. I had to refer to other biochemistry and nutritional text to understand what the author was refering to. I would not recommend this in place of a good biochemistry text. When complex processes are first introduced, detailed explantions of conversion processes are needed to get the depth of understanding. The map in the back was a strong plus. It took all the body processes and joined them together to show interactions among the chemical conversions. This was the strong point for the entire book and I might have purchased the book just for that. This was a recommended text for a nutrition class, but the instructor admitted she would not have recommended this had she looked through it first.

A too simply and vague way to describe "biochemistryland". May be good for someone but certainly not for medical students preparing for the Boards.

Libby is a young woman who has been given an incredible opportunity designing stage costumes and coordinating the stage design for a country star. Clay is a young man who has been hired by Max, the country star to coordinate his tour after the Max fired the last man. Clay and Libby are intrigued with one another and eventually, there cones the time that Clay must spank Libby for her poor choices. After that, they develop a relationship. This is a sweet story about young love and a spanking or two thrown in. I give this story 4 stars.

Nothing outstanding here. It is a sweet spanking story, but the intimate scenes generated no heat for me and the spanking was mixed with laughing and made it seem that really inappropriate behavior was not really a big deal. I will not be checking out more books by this author.

Libby Hamilton, 22 years old, is talented and fortunate to have been hired without prior experience to be over costume and stage designer for country music star Max Walls. Unfortunately, she lets her temper and mouth get her into trouble. Clay Harris has been hired as Max's new business manager. Clay let's Libby know that he has heard of her behavior and he will take her in hand if she gets too big for her britches. Being Libby, she crosses the line. The relationship between Libby and Clay is entertaining with a sweet and romantic love story. The story has several spanking scenes, including an erotic spanking. The sex is moderate and not graphic.

84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

This is a terrible edition

This is a terrible edition. I opened the book up to see that "a very bad cess" in the April 10, 1950 letter had been changed to "a very bad success." A bad cess is an Irish curse. I wanted this book for a gift but I'll just be putting it in the Good Will bag.

beautiful book, but be wary of which edition you get

This is a quick, amazing read about a writer and her favorite English bookshop. But make sure you get an older edition, like maybe the 1990 Penguin paperback.

Somehow I ended up with a version that Amazon said was 2013 from Important Books (the copy I actually received says 2014 Stellar Books). This edition has a cheap, sloppy feel. The formatting is awful, there are text errors, and the cover is an overly enlarged version of the image file from Wikipedia's 84, Charing Cross Road page. Seriously. It even has the same small, brown stain in the artwork.

Please, please do yourself a favor and find a professionally printed version of this great book.

Mail-order romance before "You've Got Mail"

What's not to love about this book? Easy to read, no complicated, or stage-crafted, Hollywood infused drama. This is a lovely story (and trust me - I'm a man that NEVER uses the word "lovely" to describe things) about a woman from the Bronx and her transatlantic dalliance with a staid London bookseller. The story is told over changing decades from the aftermath of WWII to the late 70's. Helene Hanff is both the author and subject of this book. The book's title refers to the bookstore's address in London. The story is about her life as a script reader, her love for rare and out of print books, and the bookseller (Frank Doel)who goes to great lengths to find those books for her. Her ability to write about daily events makes you see and feel the changes that are occurring in America while Europe struggles to rebuild. Before "You've Got Mail", "When Harry Met Sally", or even "The Notebook" - people would sometimes meet as penpals and could be charmed by one another's kindnesses. There are no flashes of nudity here, no sordid details of extramarital affairs (Frank is married, with children). Instead, you'll find two people who become friends through the mail and still respect one another in the morning. A great read!

Hillarious!

When I first purchased this book, i was waiting for my lap top to stop acting up so while i was waiting, i began reading (from my i-phone as I don't have a Kindle) and I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN!

Okay, its a quick read, but what do you want for .99?? I was laughing my butt off at some of the comments in here. It amazes me that there are people out there that we live and work with who have the time to verbally combat each other the way they do. Some distasteful, mostly hilarious. The "commentator" part was a bit weak, but the actual bantering was hysterical! You cant go wrong for .99!!

You have to wonder... exactly what kind of a person would take the time to peruse the prose of others to compile a collection like this?

MY HERO, that's who!

This masterpiece is absolutely hilarious. I bought it thinking it would be fun to read a bit here and a bit there. I ended up reading it through. These people are priceless.

I can't wait for the second installment.

Excellent idea Mr. Fogarty, keep em coming.

This is a fantastic book for anyone. The comments some people will make everyone cry for more. Mr. Fogarty must have placed a tremendous amount of effort in research. I highly recommend this to you the viewer of this comment. Can't wait for the author to publish more of his work.....

One should not seriously use hypnosis without reading this book. You will come away knowing much more about hypnosis itself apart from its therapeutic uses. It also gives a useful picture of Erickson through his research interests and papers rather than the usual writing about Erickson which is by disciples. I think you will find good reasons in Erickson himself for admiring the man and his work. I have been using hypnosis therapeutically since the 1970s and I think anybody serious about the subject will benefit from this book.

Still another of the Erickson books I had a long time ago and had never known what happened to it! I got this one Friday; it had been left in my mailbox, and I started reading it. What a wealth of information; I felt as if I were sitting in his office and observing more of his incredible work with various patients---and getting a lot more out of it than when I had first read it years ago. Definitely a "must" read.
