As a new Shodan but an old teacher, I found Mr. Massey's book short, to the point, and strategic. His revolving curriculum plan is priceless! Even if one does not agree w/ everything (e.g. Teaching white belts orange belt katas) his ideas give fodder for thought in developing meaningful, effective and fun. Worth the little bit of money in order to relearn creativity and discipline in developing your classes.

Her finest work

Colleen McCulloch has written many books but I consider this, a very early work, to be her finest. It is a simple story of unconventional love, beautifully told. The characters are very strongly drawn, and it is easy to identify with the feelings of Mary Horton as she comes to grips with her love for a young man so totally unlike her. It is a topic which could so easily have led to a different and tasteless result - instead it is a truly lovely book.

If you liked Forrest Gump. READ THIS! (A Grade)

There are no words to describe this wonderful and moving novel. Yes, it maybe a bit outdated, but the charatcer of Tim has so much heart and goodness in him, that most readers will wish he was real so they could take him home.
Tim is a somewhat mentally handicapped 25 year old (think Forrest Gump). He lives with his mother, father and sister and basically just works and lives a simple life. He lives this simple life because that is what everybody thinks he is limited to. Until Mary comes along....
Mary is a 40 something spinster, who likes order and no confusion. She lives in her own simple life also till Tim enters it. At first it looks like an employee to employer and then mother to son, then friend to friend. It becomes so much more complicated as their feelings grow into something more. But many things are against them, the age difference, their lifestyles and most importantly, Tim's mental capacity.
Through Tim's outlook on life, Mary comes out of her shell and finally enjoys what is around her. She helps Tim feel important and learn so much more then he was ever able to understand.
This story becomes so much more than an enduring love between a man and a woman. We see two lost soul who equal each other in so many ways.
The only thing missing is a much longer book, or even a sequel to see how Mary and Tim have succeeded.
So beautiful and poignant!!

As a person who adores both Harry Potter and Salman Rushdie, this is one of my all-time favorite books. I have read this book at least 8 times in the past few years, and I have lent it to many a friend and loved one. The story is engrossing, the characters are complex and endearing, and McCullough's writing is magical. As a writer and an editor, this is a story I appreciate every time I read it.

Drugs, immorality, deviant sexual practices, lack of self worth, low self image and the basic lack of historical worth has led to many individuals losing respect for themselves and others. I feel we are all role models and have a duty to the youth and others to step up and lead where others won't. Real Men and its upcoming volumes is my personal contribution to Men, Women and ethnicities who have not had a voice for so long. I feel like this could also give others insight on what I go through and possibly educate those who let ignorance be their guide. Music, sports, and acting have been said to be our only ways out of poverty and prison. I feel like education and discipline are the keys. Knowledge of God and Self are essential now more than ever . . . Thank You

Very good read!!!!

I didn't know what to expect when reading this book. I was wondering how the cooking would tie in, it connected everything together just right. I know that all many of us ask for is some help from our husbands/boyfriends and if more men would get in the kitchen and cook a few meals, there would be a lot more happy women out here. It's the thought that counts, but these recipes will help your man to get it right! It was a very good read. I really connected to chapter 7, "You don't have to be a follower", and 14 "Words of encouragement". I think both young and old could get something out of this book, and male and female too. It's not a long book, it's long enough. Buy it for your husband, son, daughter, or friend. They won't be disappointed. I'll be trying some of these recipes myself.

Katrin Schumann is a journalist, freelance editor, and mother of three. She lives in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Excellent, but this whole field lacks scientific rigor

As a middle in a large family and having middles of my own, this book explained much. To my surprise, it also illuminated my relationship with my firstborn wife. I had not read any books on birth order before this one, but had heard the various theories over the years. What this book did for me was make me glad I'm a middleborn. I'll take the package of strengths and weaknesses of the middleborn over the first-, last- or only-born any day. I'm equally glad I have some middles of my own for the same reasons. I also don't blame my parents for any of the "negative" consequences of being a middleborn. In the end, my birth order (among other things) created a set of circumstances that helped form who I am...and I like who I am. My birth order doesn't define me, but it helps explain me. I think the explanatory power of birth order would vary greatly among individuals.

My one criticism of any birth order work is that it's too easy to find famous people whose lives fit a particular mold. It reminds me of horoscopes somewhat. We can all pick a particular sign, then go find a famous person who exemplifies most of the traits of that sign. Doing so doesn't prove anything even though many uncritical minds think it does. While I enjoyed reading about how famous middles exemplified a particular middleborn trait, I couldn't help but think that this is a classic case of a "model searching for data" rather than "data searching for a model." The former is a cardinal sin in the scientific world, but it happens all the time, especially in the softer sciences like psychology. Could an equally powerful set of examples be selected that would argue against the author's hypotheses? Still Salmon seems to be aware of the bias inherent in this type of research and is careful not to overstate what the data tells us.

This book takes you back through the memories of a child, a little girl, named Reba Rae Alsup. Memories of her families life in the 40's and 50's in Randolph County Arkansas for the Morgans.



Reba's family lived in the North East corner of Randolph County Arkansas, between the towns of Walnut Ridge and Pocahontas.


Her father, William Henry Morgan, was a farm worker.


Her mother, Mae Morgan, cared for the family along with any other chores that might help Henry with his work load.


Reba was the third child in the family of seven children. She was born two months premature. The Doctor, who arrived at the house a few hours after her birth, told Reba's father, if she could survive through the third day, she might have a chance to live.


Reba's life has always been like that, surviving through to the next day. This seems to be a commonly shared story amongst many people of Arkansas in the 40's and 50's. Reba wrote down what she saw and heard. Reba started keeping a diary at a very young age. She would write in the diary the stories shared amongst family members, whenever the family gathered on a Sunday or for a special occasion. This was her way of having a record of the family history. Reba would always ask questions.
“Tell me about our house burning to the ground before I was born?
Is it true that Uncle Tommy wife was doing the ironing when the gas iron she was using explored, causing her to burn to death?”
She remembered very well the death of her younger brother, Bennie, and her sister, Grace Lee.
How excited she was when, at the age of 16, they got electricity in their home. The thrill of meeting the man who would be the love of her life, James Warren Alsup.
Their marriage, and all the adventures that always follows the start of any new family life.
The thrill of the birth of her six children, the loss of one at the age of four. The pride of a mother in watching her children start their own families.
The loss of her one true love.


This book is excerpts from her diary, which she still continues to write in, at the age of 85. She has a fairly large web site, http://www.thealsupconnection.com, with the genealogical records of the Alsup and Morgan family history which, she still maintains.
