Joanna Bolouri worked in sales before she began writing professionally at the age of thirty. Winning a BBC comedy script competition allowed her to work and write with stand-up comedians, comedy scriptwriters and actors from across the UK. She is the author of The List and she's had articles and reviews published in The Skinny, the Scottish Sun, the Huffington Post, and HecklerSpray. She lives in Glasgow with her daughter.

Laugh out loud funny

This book is laugh out loud funny- as outrageous as it is tender- lovable characters and difficult to put down. Why can't American romance novels be this good? No one trying to cool- normal (well not quite normal) middle class folks trying to find a little love.

If you loved Bridgit Jones you are going to love Cat (Catriona) ...

If you loved Bridgit Jones you are going to love Cat (Catriona) Buchanan.
Being a single mum and not having much luck in her love life, Cat decides to kill two birds with one stone. Her column in a Scottish paper isn't getting the readers it once did and after being ambushed into reading The Rules of Engagement by a work colleague, Cat decides to take on the challenges in the book to find herself a man and to also write about her experiences in her column to hopefully bump the figures up.
I Followed the Rules is such a light hearted and uplifting read. I loved the storyline and there is a great mixture of characters.
Grace, Cat's daughter is adorable and I love Cat's interfering sister Helen. Cat herself is a great character and comes across as being a lot of fun, would certainly love to have her come along on a girls night out.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out what is going to happen in the story and that's what I love about chick lit books, they are so easy reading so that you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the story for what it is.
As with any love life things never go to plan even if you are following instructions! Luckily being married myself I won't be attempting the rules in The Rules of Engagement any time soon.

Hilarious Laugh-Out-Loud Fun!

If you liked Sex and the City and the wit of Gilmore Girls, you need to read I Followed The Rules (And Then I Broke Them) by Joanna Bolouri. It's about Catriona (Cat) and her quest to meet the right man. She's been single for six years and she's...well, she's ready to mingle. But her love life isn't the greatest, and she's becoming frustrated. Then she comes across a book called The Rules of Engagement, written by a dude with "rules" on how to date properly. (One rule? Don't Sleep With Him Right Away.) Cat decides to do whatever the book suggests and it seems to work! She meets Tom, a handsome dentist. But she also feels a pull towards Dylan, who doesn't seem interested in anything serious.
This book made me laugh out loud a number of times. From Cat's wit to her moody cat named Heisenberg, I never felt bored. However, if curse words offend you, this might not be the book for you as the f-word is on nearly every other page. I have a bit of a potty mouth, so it was nothing to me, but I know some people want to faint at such a word being used. Cat is also the mother to an eight-year-old daughter named Grace, and I enjoyed reading their moments together because I have a daughter the same age.
The book moves quickly, and you'll be missing Cat when it's all over. Perhaps every time I hear the f-bomb, I'll think of her.
