About the Author
PETER AUGHTON was born in Southport and educated at King George V School. He has always been fascinated by the great city of Liverpool and his earliest memories are of the Mersey ferries, the Overhead Railway and the shipping, the trams and the post war bomb sites. Peter has been a member of the Liverpool and District Family History Society for many years and he still gives occasional talks to the society. He is a lecturer at the University of the West of England, and his career includes twelve years in the aerospace industry.

Quite Readable History

Liverpool: A People's History by Peter Aughton is a very readable and enjoyable history of the English city which grew from a tiny fishing village to become recently named the European Capital of Culture! The author makes the history of this little town on the Mersey River come alive as he uses excellent research to trace the history and grown until it became a city thriving in 1207 with its major seaport. It survived the horrors of the slave trade, built the world's very first pulic railway, and in the 18th century was a fashionable spa. But then t he major slump came when millions departed for a better way of life in the New World. But regrowth came in the next century and today this is a very special city with a unique history. Even if you are not a Brit, you'll enjoy this book and want to visit there.
