About the Author
Louis L'Amour (1908-1988) was an American author whose Western stories are loved the world over. Born in Jamestown, North Dakota, he was the most decorated author in the history of American letters. In 1982 he was the first American author ever to be awarded a Special National Gold Medal by the United States Congress for lifetime literary achievement, and in 1984 President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the nation. He was also a recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award.
Jim Gough s distinctive voice is well known in the Southwest through his hundreds of commercials and radio shows. He has also appeared in such feature films as "Urban Cowboy, Places in the Heart", and "JFK". A native of Austin, Texas, he can also be found entertaining with his western swing band, the Cosmopolitan Cowboys.

Pulpy fiction at L'Amour's best!

This story--the audiobook has just the one novella "The Rider of the Ruby Hills," about Ross Haney--is L'Amour at his pulpy best, producing one of his better tales. Ross Haney, our protagonist, isn't that interesting, another one of L'Amour's typical cookie-cutter heroes, cartoonishly hyper-masculine to the point of self-parody at times. The story's value is in its descriptions of the Old Southwest and its atmosphere. Descriptions of stunning landscapes, beautiful horses, saloons, the grizzled old barkeep that doesn't want shotgun shells wrecking his place, that's what keeps you interested. And Sherry Vernon, the strongest female lead I've seen so far in L'Amour's stories. She shines, a bold, humorous, and athletic horsewoman. Ross Haney is much more interesting when he has to deal with her wit and comebacks. There are some annoying moments of Sherry yielding to the villain's nefarious plot, but she's never forced exactly into the unbearable "damsel in distress" role. Overall, it's a fun joyride, one of L'Amour's better pulp fiction efforts.

Louis L'Amour at his best!

Ross Haney is riding onto the Ruby Hills with a powder keg about to go off. Two rival ranchers who built their herds on rustling and murder are on the verge of a range war. Ross Haney, a drifter, has fought Comanches, rustlers, hunted buffalo, hunted horse thieves, and suffered the heat, cold and hardships of the trail. He comes to the Ruby Hills with all he owns: A horse, saddle, rifle and pistols. He is here to carve out his place here. Then something he didn't count on... He falls in love with a woman who is promised to a cold blooded killer. But why is a nice girl taking up with Star Levitt? There is plenty of action and mystery set in L'Amour's finest western prose. One of my absolute favorites!

What a wonderful way to pass the time on the treadmill. I enjoyed this so much I doubled my time working out. If you like westerns you will enjoy every second of this audio book.
