A superb costumer creates a wonder

The entire Bizenghast series deserves a dedicated read-through. Its story and quirky humor create a balanced mix of nail-biting suspense and side-splitting guffaws in just the rights amounts. LeGrow's characters are both charming and compelling, slowly growing from seemingly simplistic personae into surprisingly deep and unique individuals.
I admit that when I picked up and read the first volume, I was a little unsure. Then again, I'd just come off of reading Kyo Kara Maou! which has an entirely different atmosphere and art style. On the second go, I was much more appreciative of what Bizenghast had to offer.
LeGrow has one of the most distinctive art styles I've seen to date. It is true that her cover art varies from the inside black-and-white ink panels, but it doesn't make the interior any less enjoyable. Over the span of the seven volumes, the amount of skill she demonstrates grows incrementally, and I find it very enjoyable watching a talented artist grow into a phenomenal one. At the same time, she consistently brings the same eerie and dark atmosphere that made the Bizenghast so intriguing in the first place, from the first cover to the last page (so far). To say it's 'morbidly beautiful' or 'grotesquely dazzling' would not be off the mark. The details are stunning, and the style grew on me the more I read. And, yes, as an artist who designs awe-inspiring costumes (the bulk of which being original designs instead of cosplay alone), you can rest assured the characters themselves have just as awesome designs of their own to ogle at.
As was stated in an earlier review, this volume does leave us wanting. It was a bit like running into a brick wall instead of hanging from a cliff, and while I'm still waiting at the edge of my seat for the next volume, there's a bit of pouty grumpiness sitting in my stomach from the too-short length. I agree it should have been tacked onto the end of 6 or extended further, but it doesn't make the story any less interesting. The action, while stopped, has not blandly died off as it does in so many other books and comics. It feels more like pressing pause at the high point of a movie and waiting impatiently for your friend to hurry up and finish her business in the bathroom so you can get on with it. Not unbearable, but frustrating enough to warrant this volume three stars instead of the four or five the series deserves.

I bought it for my grand granddaughter. She was so happy. I like this stories for children, so well written and such illustrations! I'll continue buying Bizenghast, if there are more. I have the whole collection. Beautiful Amazon. Yours truly, Eugenia
